LUM), a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county` of Chautauqua 5 and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Bedsteads, of which the following, taken in connection. with the accompanying dran ings, is a specification. p
The invention relates to sheet metal furni ture and the object of my improvement is to provide a sheet metal bedstead construction which is durable, cheap and when the bedstead-is set up is extremely rigid; the inven tion consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts as shown in this specification and the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion ofthe head or foot board of a bedstead showing the corner post and a portion of .the connected rail or panel portions of the same being broken away to show the construction and the panel and top rail are shown in sect-ion. iig. 2 is a lengthwise *sectional view yoit the corner post, showing the attachment of the panel to the corner post. 3 is a detail or' a portion of the edge of the panel VowingV the 'locking' lugs Se for attaching to thecorner post or rails; and

' The 'numeral 10 designates the corner post, the tubular port-ion of which is preferably formed from' a single sheet of metal bent into rectangular form. The lower portion k of the corner post- 10 has cuts therein at each corner and then welded together by acetylin or electric welding so as to giveV the lower portions 1l of the post 10 a gradual taper.
l The ost 10 is vformed with the slot 12 at one si e between the adjacent inturned edges. The edges of the sheet metal are inturned and givena return bend in opposite the end of one of the vbed' directions so as to form anges 14 for return bend joints. A locking strip 13 is provided which engages the inturned flanges 1% each side of the slot l2; locking strip 13 is so formed as to bind the parts firmly together. A lengthwise fold 15 is provided lengthwise of locking strip 13 which receives therein the edge of the panel plate 16. The plate 16 has the projecting spaced lugs 1T formed thereon, each having the nude-nent 18 at one side. The fold 15 is provided with spaced slots 19 to receive therethrough the correspondinglyspaced lugs 17. Q
It is apparent that the edge of the vpanel plate 16 may be inserted through the slot 12, also, that'i the under-cut portions 18 of lugs 17 are on the lower side of said lugs on panel. 16, then they will lock and be held in slots 19 by the weight of the plate 16. The plate '16 will thus assist in holding all parts rigidly together.
The post 10 is preferably formed with a metal cap-piece 20 which is formed at its lower end to enter the upper end of the sheet metal portion of the post 10. A corresponding lower end 21 is provided which enters the lower end of the'sheet metal post 10, and the two cast e'nds 2() and 21 are connected by means of a rod 22. The rod 22 preferably extends down through the'block 21 for the attachment of a suitable caster to the lower end of the post 10. The cap-piece 2O is projvided with a' side extension 23 which fits within the hollow sheet metal top rail 24 of panel 16. A cross-rod 25 is provided to conneet the two corner posts of the head or foot board. The sheet metal rail 24 is attached to the upper edge of panel plate 16 the same as corner post l0 is attached thereto by means of a locking strip 18. .'Ihevlower edge 26 of panel 16 is preferably turned at a Tightengle and then bent back upon the plate 16 forming an acute angle therewith, therebyl giving such an angular inclination rtgiiliie part 26 that dust does not lodge upon -the same to any extent. y
Crossrod A25 preferably extends through cap 20 into a nut' 27 whichnut has an open'-`A ing 28 at right" angles to rod 25 for rod 22 to pass therethrough, thereby locking the nut 27 firmly lin position within cap 20.
The side rails 29 are made of hollow sheet metal by beingbent from a single sheet. The sides are preferably pa allel except von the lower inner edge, and t ie edges are inturned in opposite directions and united by s .tie-strip/() lengthwise of the lower edge 'l of the side rail. A strip 31 of heavy sheet metal is riveted within the ends o' the tubular side rail 29; strip 31 is provided with lugs'32 which lock within correspondingly placed slots 40 in corner postl 10. The strip 3l 1s given arectangular bend 33 to one side in its central portion so as toE brace litmly both sides of the sheet metal side ralls 29. The strip 31 does not need to extend the full length of the side railv 29, but
only a suflicient distance to firmly brace' the sheet metal of which the side rail 29 is composed and is riveted to the opposite inner sides of the side rail.
The numeral 34' designates the bed slat *which is preferably made with the vertical sides 35 and a flat top. The bed slats 34 are supported on side rail 29 by ineans of a projection 36 lengthwise of the lower edge of the tubular side rail 29. Projection 36 is preferably formed on its u per side at such an angle of inclination tliat the dust and dirt willnot accumulate on the same and is of sufficient width to allow of the spaed'slots 37 in said inclined upper side of extension 36. The slots 37 are spaced j to correspnd to the vertical sides 35 of y 38 is of just sufficient depth to permit theA bed slats 34. A notch 38 is provided within the vertical sides 35 an'd so spacedin relation to the end of thefslat 34 as to receive` therein the vertical! side of the extension 36. f

A sheet metal joint comprising oppositely turned edges, a binding strip having return bend edges to engage and hold said oppositely. turned edges, a central lengthwise fold o n said binding strip opposite the 'opening between the said oppositely turned. edges, said fold having spaced slots therein in line with [the opening between said oppositely turned edges, a-plate inserted jin "said opening and fold, an dspaced lugs onf said plate to engage said' spaced slots.
3. In a sheet metal bedstead, a corner post comprising a sheet of metal bent in tubular f orm with adjacent inturned edges, a binding strip having ret-urn 4bend edges, said binding strip having spaced slots, a panel extending between said inturned edges, said panel' having spaced lugs to engage said spaced slots in said binding strip, a top rail, for said panel having similar inturned edges and 'binding strip with spaced slots and lugs to hold said top rail onv said anel, and connecting rods and caps to hol said parts together, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a sheet metal bedstead, a tubular sheet metal post, a metal cap and a lower end for said sheet metal post, a rod connecting said cap and lower end, a panel at- .tached to said corner post, a projecting shoulderon said cap','a top. rail attached to said panel and fittingover said shoulder on said cap to hold the' end of said rail, and a connecting rod extending through said top rail and ad] ustably attached `to said cap.
5. In a sheet metal bedstead, a sheet metal side rail comprising a sheetgof metal bent in tubular form having lengthwise inturned return bend edges, a binding strip having opposite return bends on its `edofes to hold said inturned edges firmly together, va plate riveted within thc tubular end of said rail, an angular return bend in said plate to brace the sides of said tubular side rail, and lugs'on said plate to engage the corner post.
6. In a sheet metal bedstead,a corner post comprising a sheet of metal bent in tubular form with adjacent return bend edges, a
'binding strip having opposite return bend edges to engtige and. hold said return bend edges on said tubular post, a central lengthwise fold ni saidabinding strip opposite the .opening etweenl said oppositely turned edges, saidi'fold having spaced slots therein in line with the openin in said oppositely turned edges, a panel p ate inserted within said fold, undercut spaced lugs on said panel plate to engage in said spaced slots, a metal cap and a metal lower end for said sheet metal post, a rod connecting said cap and lower end, a tubular'top rail attached to'said panel, and a connecting rod cxtending through said top rail and attached to said cap, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
