. invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in automatic wrenches.
An object of this invention is the provision of a wrench of such construction that the movable jaw can be locked in its adjusted positions, thesaid jaw being of such. construction that upon its release it will be automatically moved to its extended posi tion away from the stationary jaw.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and oi ficient in use and readilyoperated.
With the above and other objects in view,
this invention resides inthe novel features after more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to the accompanying drawing by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates generally my improved wrench which consn. of the customary stock 6 which is formed at one end with'a stationary head 7 and at intervals throughout its length with perforations 8 for the reception of bolts 9 or other suitable i'as devices by means of which the handle 0 is-seeured thereon and held against displacement.
The handle 10 is substantially ill-shaped in cross section consisting of'th'e customary legs 11 which engage the opposite sides of the stock 6 and receive the fastening devices Q, the said legs 11 being connected by an arch portion 12 which'extends in spaced"relation from the adjacent edge of the stock 6 to produce a passage 13 in which is slidably located an operating rack bar 14 to one end of which is secured in any manner the movable jaw 15 for movement to and from the said stationary jaw 7 for coiiperation therewith.
The inner edge of the rack bar 14: is formed with a plurality of teeth 16 for engagement with the sharpened end 17 of a pawl 18 pivoted intermediate its ends at 19 to a finger 20 which projectsinto the notch or pocketQl formed in the bar .6 and in which the said pawl 1 is located.'
A spring pressed pin 22 engages the operating end of the pawl 18 and serves to nor-' mally force the terminal 17 thereof into engagement with the-teeth 16, while bearing against the opposite ends of the said pawl as it 23 is an operating pin 24: which projects through an opening formed in the stock 6. It is provided with a head 25 by means of which the said pin can be forced inward and the terminal 1'? disengaged from the teeth 16.
A retract-ile spring 26 is attached to the end of the handle 10 and to the adjacent end of the rack bar 14 and serves to auto I matically slide the jaw 15 to its extended po sition, in which it will be retained upon the release of the pawl 18.
It should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without. departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
From the foregoing disclosure taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
it nanifest that a wrench such as described ch will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device is provided. Having thus fully described thisinvention what claim as new. and desire to protect by Letters Patent; is:
l. in a wrench, the combination of a stock having a stationary a tubular handle connected to the stock, a jaw sliding on the stock, a rack bar connected at one end to the sliding jaw and extending intothe handle, retracting means connected to the rack bar and normally tending to draw thesliding jaw away prom the stationary jaw, apawl located in a recess in the stock and pivoted centrally a spring tensioned reciprocating member hearing against the outer edge of the pawl and normally holding the same in looking engagement with therack bar, an d a (lepressible pin extending through the back of the stock and bearing against the opposite end of the pawl for depressing such end to release the'pawl from locking engagement with the rack bar.
