DOOR-KNOB FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1912. Serial No. 686,030.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZACHARIAH Rice, a citizen of the United States, residing at Landisburg, in the county of Perry and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful DoorsKnob Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door knob fasteners.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide means for locking the sleeve on which the door knob is secured, to the spindle. I
A further object of the invention is to provide an attaching means which will lock the sleeve and spindle together and which will resiliently engage the sleeve to prevent its displacement and at the same time present a neat appearance. I
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will. appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it. being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective, view of the locking device. Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same in its attached Fig. 4 alongitudinal sect-ion showing a modified form of pin. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of Fig. 2 in which the section is taken through the locking device. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the pin shown inFig. 4.
In the drawings, 10 designates the spindle which is, formed with the usual openings 11. Removably mounted upon the spindle is a sleeve 12 which is attached to the door knob 14, the sleeve 12 being provided with an opening 15 which registers with one of the openings 11 in the spindle.
The sleeve retaining, device consists of the a resilient clip 16 which is adapted to embrace the sleeve 12, the clip 16 being of suiiicient length to embrace the greater portion of the.
sleeve, securely holding the clip against displacement. The pin 1,7 is secured centrally to the clip being provided with the enlargedv head 18 which enters the opening in the sleeve, said head being ofa diameter slightly Fig. 3 a longitudinal section.
less than the opening in the sleeve. It will be noted that when the pin is positioned within the opening in the spindle, the head 18 will enter the opening in the sleeve, the clip 16 holding the same against accidental displacement. In the form shown in Fig. 4 a head-l9 is offset from the pin 20. By this construction it will be noted that the sleeve 12 may be adjusted with respect to the spindle 10, it being noted that the same may 4 be disposed either toward the knob or toward the edge of thesleeve,. this construction providing an adjustment which under ordinary circumstances is secured by removing the pin from one opening in the spindle and placing the same in another opening in the spindle. It is found necessary, in order to properly space the sleeve on the spindle to sometii'nes provide openings in the spindle other than those formed in the same when it is manufactured, the present device overcoming the necessity of interposing an opening between the two openings which have already been formed, in order to secure a certain adjustment of the sleeve on the spindle which cannot be accomplished by utilizing the openingsalready formed in the spindle.
Itwill be noted that by reversing the head 19 the sleeve may be adjusted with respect to the spindlewithout an opening being formed between two of the openings initially formed in the spindle.
The many advantages of a construction ofthis character will be clearly apparent as it will be not/ed that the sleeve may be adjusted with respect to the spindle in a simple and convenient manner. It will also be noted that both forms of this device may be easily and economically manufactored, and that the clip and pin may be readily positioned in the registering open-,
ings of the sleeve same together.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new. is: 1. A kno'b retaining device consisting of a circular resilient'clip, a pin having an enlarged head, said head being otl'set with respect to the said pin, an extension formed integral with said head ada ted to extend and spindle to lock the \through said clip and secure y hold the pin theretos j 2. lna door knob the combination ot u knob proper, a sleeve attached thereto, said Patented Jan. 7,1913.
sleeve being provided with an opening in the side Wall thereof, a spindle adapted to fit within said sleeve and engage the side thereof, said spindle having a hole therein adapted to register with said sleeve hole, a resilient clip adapted to embrace said sleeve, a pin having an enlarged offset head secured to said clip, said pin being adapted to fit within said spindle hole, said head being adapted to'fit Within the sleeve hole to thereby prevent any longitudinal movement of W.
