BROOM-HOLIOR.
1,049,238, Specification of ,Application filed August l,
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, l,ViLLiiivi JAMES HOPE, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident of Tunica, in the county of Tunica and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specilieation.
My invention is an improvement in broom holders, and has for its object, a simple and elicient means for connecting a broom to a handle, in such manner that a considerable degree of resiliency is permitted between the broom and the handle, and wherein the clamping means may be adjusted for brooms of various sizes, and lwherein the handle may take a position at an angle with respect to the body, and wherein a positive gripping means is provided in connection with the clamping means.
In the drawings :Eligure l is a perspective view of the improved connecting means; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section; and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one ot' the clamping members.
In the presentembodiment of the invention, the handle l may be ot any. usual or preferred construction, and 'die said handle is provided at its lower end with a transverse longitudinal slot or recess 2.
' The broom proper may be of any desired or preferred construction, in the present instance consisting o a head or holder for carrying the bristles fl. A resilient plate 5 has one ot its ends inserted in the slot 2, and a rivet G is passed transversely of 'the slotand the plate for holding the plate in place. The rivet is headed at both ends, as shown at 7, lthe' heads being preferably liush with the surface of the handle, as shown.- rlhe plate is also beveled at each of its side edges adjacent to the handle, as shown at 8, in order that there may be no projecting corners or the like between the plate and the handle, The means for connecting the plate to the broom body coinprises a pair ot clamping plates 9, each ot which is of lessor width at one end than at 'the other, and the narrow end is provided with a plu. al ty ol openings l0. The plate 5 is prov` 'with openings registering with the openi l0, and bolts .ll are passed through the registering; openings, and are engaged by wing nuts i2 on the opposite side.
t will be understood that a plate is ar- 'Letters Patent.

remote from the handle, and that each bolt Il is passed through the 2 plates and the plate 5. The bolts ll are preferably oppositely arranged, as shown more particularly in Fig. l,so that a nut l2 is on each side of the handle.
Each of the plates 9 is provided at its wide end with a lateral inwardly extending flange 13, and adjacent to the flange each side edge of each plate is provided with an inwardly extending spur 14.
The plates 9 grasp the opposite sides of the body 3, with the flanges 1B fitting the under face of the body, and extending to a point adjacent to the bristles. The spurs 14 are received in the material of the body, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the brush is firmly grasped by the plates.
In operation, when it is desired to remove a broom body, the nuts 12 are loosened and the plates 9 are sprung out away from each other and from the body to release the spurs 14. A new body is then inserted and the plates are then forced together by the nuts.
The improved clamping means will hold brooms of diil'erent size. iis ordinarily constructed, they may be made to .hold brooms ranging from. one-halt' inch in thickness to three inches. 'lhe broom cannot be slipped upwardly on account ot the convergence ot' the plates 9 at their upper end, neither can it slip downward on account ot the tlanges 13. Longitudinal movement of the broom is prevented by the spurs The plates 9 are sulliciently resilient to grip a broom lightly, and to prevent movement of the saine. IThe holdin(r ot the broom is not dependent allogether upon friction, but a positive grip is provided by reason ot' the spurs.
The clamping device being' ot two pieces is capable ol a greater range of adjustment than were it of one piece, and any looseness ot' play may be taken up by the nuts. VIn addition'the broom may take a position at an angle to the handle, thus insuring that the wear on the'bristles will be even and uni- Jforni and not at one side, as in the ordinary toi-m of broom. The broom ,may be arranged in manner in .the ,clamping device it desired, by changing @be engaging position ot the spurs 14. 'lim device is thus not only a clamping device but also an adjusting device.
ylhe holding' means may also he utilized to hold a mop or the like, and the grip is ranged on r .fh side ot that end of the plate always a positive grip and not dependent
