Description
titted Csta'tea sind @Win12,
Letters Patent No. 104,890, dated June-28, 1870.
` IMPROYEMEN'Il IN SHELVING- FOR STORES.
The Schedule referred to in theselLetters Batent and making part of the'sam'e To all whom it may concern:
'.'Be it known that I, WILLIAM EnMoxD SooT'n-of Knoxville, in the county of vKnox and in the State lof Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shelving for Stores; and do'hereby declarethatl the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompan ying drawing andfto the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The na'tuie of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of' movable shelving for stores, as will be hereinafter fully set 'fort-h.
In order to enable others skilled in the'art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which--4 Figure l is a front view, and
Figure 2, a transverse vertical section of my shelv- Figure 3 isA an-edge view of the-shutter.
A represents each section of shelving, which is mounted upon fourrollers, B B.
Each section is constructed so as to form a counter, a, with one or more drawers, b, underneath. l
Above the counter a is a series of shelves, d d, with cornice e above the same.
0n the sides'of each section A are handles, f, for
the purpose of dra-wing themy out in case of lire, or for other reasons. v
These sections maybe finished in any suitable manner, and made so as 'to lit nicely together, molding, slats, or ribs projecting at the end of one section to lap over the edge of the adjoining section, so as'to present the appearance of an unbroken front.
`The sections, when put together, may also be connected hy hooks or other suitable means.
On the back of the sections are'horizontal slats or rib's, q. g, to keep the shelving away from the wall a suitable distance. l
Along thefront of the shelving, in -the counter' a, is'A a groove, for guiding the lower edges of. the shutters C C, said shutters being, on the frout'side, provided with rollers,'h h, which, 4move upon the counter, to roll the shutters from side to side.-
At the upper edge of the shutters,ou the rcar side, is cut ashoulder, as seen in iig. 3, with two or more small guide-bars, i, attached to the rear side of the shutter, so as to form a groove, in which lits a bar, m, attac-hed to the' shelving, and forming a guide for the upper ends of the shutters.
The shutters maybe constructed in any suitable manner, either 'pancled or otherwise, as may be dcsired.
Lalso provide a curtain,'D, for cach section of .the
shelving, said curtain passing over a roller, E, in thev cornice e,.one end hanging down in front, and the other end in rear of the shelving.
, The rear end'of the curtain is provided with a bar, 7.', of suitable weight, to hold the curtain straight, the
front end having also a bar, n, with hook or other device for fastening it at anydesired point on the shelving. l-
The curtains D may be used with or without the shutters, or the shutters with or without the curtains.
I do not broadly claim store-shelving mounted upon rollers, as such has' been known heretofore. I
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rIhe' combination of the shelving sections A with guide m, shelves d, counter a, drawersbb, and rollers B, said shelves being provided with the doors C, with rollersh 71, all constructed, arranged, and used suhstantially as set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing, I have `hereunto set lm y hand this 28th day of February, 1870.
l, WILLIAM EDMONDv SCOTT. `Witnesses: l IsAAo E. BARRY, I. E. BARRY, Jr.
