Be it known that We, ALiCn EMMAGENE PAUL and LOUIS E. STASAND, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Refuse-Incnerators, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved portable refuse incinerator, especially intended for use in largecities for the purpose of cremating paper and other refuse material to be found in alleys and streets.

The objects of the invention are, first, to provide an. incinerator for the purpose specified in which material'will be quickly and thoroughly consumed, which is adapted to contain large and bulky articles, which may be moved along during the time while thewarticles therein are being consumed, and which is very strong and durable so as to withstand not onl the rough usage which such a device will, receive in practice, but further to withstand'without substantial injury the heat arising from the burning material therein.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of an incinerator embodying the features of our invention. Fig. 2 is atop plan view thereof.

The device comprises a body portion built of heavy grating Inaterial and preferably of rectangular form.

1 are corner standards which may be of angle-iron form. and between these corner standards are placed a plurality of spaced vertical bars 9, said standards and bars being secured together and spaced apart by means of bands 3, 4 and 5 at the top, bottom and middle portions of the body, respectively, the bands being secured in place by rivets 6. The lower band 4 is preferably lnade of angle iron and supports the grate bars 7, forming the bottom of the body. If desired, the bottom bars 7 may be a continuation of one series or set of the side bars 2, each of said bottom bars being twisted as at 7a so that its edges are in a vertical plane, thus providing more space between the bars for draft and also forming a more rigid bottom. 4

The body is supported for traveling movement upon wheels 8 mounted upon an axle 9 which is secured in any suitable way to the under side of the body.

10 is a handle or tongue. providing a means for drawing the device along. lVhen the device is at rest the forward portion thereof may be supported upon legs 11, which may be continuations of the forward corner standards 1. As shown in Fig. 1, the axle 9 is placed rearwardly of the vertical center of the body portion.

The top of the body may be closed by a suitable cover 12, preferably of sheet metal having a series of perforations 13 therein and having flanges 1l adapted tol lit 'over the sides of the device. The cover may be hinged to one o f the sides in any suitable way, as by providing eyes 15 at the upper edge of the body, through which eyes a rod 1G extends. The eyes may be formed by bendingr extensions of certain of the lside bars 2 into loops, and the rod 15 may be formed integral with the cover hy rolling up one edge of said cover as shown, thus providing a very simple and effective connection. In mounting the cover on the body the extensions 15 are firstslipped through openings 17 in the cover adjacent the rod 16 and are then bent about the rod to form eyes as shown. to the upper side of the cover provides means for raising and lowering the same.

In use the device is intended to be hauled through the alleys of the city and to receive paper and other refuse material. lVheu the material in the device has been ignited it will be quickly and thoroughly consumed, owing to the free access of air to the material. Ordinarily the cover 12 will be thrown down to lie alongside the device, but should the fiames from the burning material rise too high the cover may be raised to close the upper end thereof.

As will be seen, the device may be drawn along by the tongue 10 from place to place during the time when the material is burning and this is one of the advantageous features of the device.

Furthermore, as will be noted, all parts of the device are strong enough to withstand rough usage and also to resist the heat, which sometimes is quite intense, from the burning material.
