INSULATOR.
Application filed September 9, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laketon, in the county of Luce and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Insulators, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide an insulator for attachment to telegraph poles and adapted to support the current conveying wire.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a frusto-conically shaped body adapted for threaded connection with an insulator pin mounted on a pole adapted for supporting current conveying wire, spaced seat members positioned on the said body and adapted to receive thereon one of the current conveying wires, the said body being provided with a slot through which the wire is extended and a cover for the said body and adapted to threadedly engage the same to rigidly position the current conveying wire relatively to the said body.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my'device showing the same connected to an insulator pin. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of my device showing how the current conveying wire is retained thereby. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the body portion, the cover being removed therefrom. Fig. 4c is a view looking at the under side of the cover. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken upon the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the modification.
Referring more particularly to the drawings I provide a frusto-conically shaped body 10 having the inner periphery provided with threads 11 adapted for engagement with a threaded insulator pin 12 secured to the cross bar of a pole adapted for supporting current conveying wires. The upper end of the body 10 terminates in an integral reduced head 13 provided with a vertically extending slot 14:, a seat 15 being formed adjacent the base of the head 1a and on the body 10. seat 15 and disposed in opposite relation, are seat members 16 provided with grooves 17 in alinement with the slot 14 and the said seat members have their upper surfaces knurled.
A cover 18 is adapted for threaded engagement with the head 13 and is positioned to encircle the head, the base of the cover 13 being adapted to rest on the seat 15. Formed on the outer surface of the cover 18 and extending outwardly therefrom are a plurality of oppositely disposed lugs 19, the said lugs being adapted to receive a wrench in engagement therewith for screwing the cover 18 into engagement with the head 13, the mentioned cover 18 being gripped by the knurled surfaces of the seat members 16 when the cover is mounted in position, thus preventing accidental rotation of the cover,
In the application of my device the body 10 is threadedly connected to the insulator pin 12 which is secured to the cross bar of a pole and a current conveying wire 20 is disposed to extend through the slot 14; and seat on the seat members 16 in the groove 17 thereof after which the cover 18 is threadedly engaged with the head. 13 and bears against the wire 20 to rigidly retain the wire lnengagement with the seat members 16, the said seat members being provided with knurled surfaces, as mentioned, to prevent any slipping of the wire 20.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that an efiicient and durable insulator is provided and although I do not limit myself to the details of construction thereof and the material used in the construction, I preferably make the body 10 and cover 18 of glass and the seat members 1.6 of copper.
Fig. 6 illustrates a slightly modified form of the device, in which the interiorly threaded body 10 has its central portion substantially cone-shaped as at 11 and arranged between the walls formed by the slot 14:.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
In an insulator, the combination with a body for connection with an insulator pin, of a reduced head formed with the body and provided with a vertical slot, a seat formed on the said body adjacent the base of the slot, pairs of knurled seat members on the said seat, the seat members in each pair of seat members being spaced apart to form grooves registering with the slot in the said head, a Wire adapted for reception in the said slot and said grooves, and a cover for threaded connection with the said body the said cover being movable on the body to engage the said Wire and the knurled surfaces of the said seat members.
