PIN TUMBLER LOCK.

PETER F. AUGENBRAUN, oF STANFORD, CONNECTICUT, AssloNoR-To k:rena -YALE n 'row-NE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, ors'rAMFoRD, coNNEC'iIcU'r.`
P IN-TUMBLER Loox.
Td all whom it may concern:-
` Be it known 'that I, PETER -F. AUGEN- imAUN, acitizen' of the vUnited States, residing at Stamford, in the countyof Fair- `field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain. new and luseful Improvements in Pin-Tuin ler Locks; and I do hereby declare th -following to be a full, clear, and exactvdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to' which it Ia/ppertains to make and use the'same.'
linvention relates to an improvement in pin tumbler locks, and more particularly 'to an improvement on the construction dis.
closed in Patent'No. 966,295, granted to me. August 2nd1910. Y v
Inpin'tumbler locks as ordinarily con7 structed, Awhen the key is inserted in 'the plug and turned, the key is prevented from` eing withdrawn, by reason of the fact that the -tumblers carried by the plug, are out of alinement with the tumbler holesv in the cylinder, consequently they cannot be moved longitudinally by the bittings ofthe' key, and as the tumblers engage the bitt-ings of the'key, the latter is held against withdrawal. The tuinblers must have some play` in their holes, and when a key is inserted and withdrawn the tuniblers are pushed firstagainst one side and then against the other side of the tumbler holes, which results in some wear and distortion both ou the tumblers'and holes and causes unsatisfactory action of the .tumblers Y In the constructiondiscloied in `mypatent above referredto, 'I4 take the strain and the .consequent wear from the tumble'rs` and plug and *transfer it to the c linder and key, by means of a. plate secure 'to the rear face of the cylinder,- with one edge resting' in a groove inthe plug. While this patented construction is mechanically excellent, it involves in some instances the increasing`of. the depth of the lock, and the object of the present invention is to provide a simpler and lessY expensive means forlocking the plug to the cylinderlwithout increasing the pointed out iu the claims.-
depth of the lock. Y
With these objects in view my invent-ion consists in the parts and combinat )ns of parts as will be more fully'explained and `In, the accompanying drawings, Figuie 1 is a view in longitudinal section of my iml Y Specification of Lctterslatent. v v Patented Dc. 17,1912., vApplcatiin-lcrl January 25, 1912. Serial No. 673,339.k i i proved lock. Fig. 2 is a View in" elevation of the 'rear end of saine, showing the bolt.Y Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line wof Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a. vview-of` the plug detached and4 F155 5 is a view of the locking plate or segment.' l 5 holes or recessesV arranged to aline with tion of the pin tumblers 3, which lat'teiare of the well fltnown' construction', and.A are operated by the key in 'the usualinanner.'
` 6o 1' represents a cylinder, provided with a lcylindrical bere-for the plug.2, and with The plug 2 is cylindrical in "shape, :and is i provided with` Y al Y key-'vay` 41.4iextending throughoutliits length,v id .is-5,provided at .its innerendand at pontjjustl outside of and also against'any longitudinal4 movement,
hence any longitudinal .pull-'on the plug vthrough the key. is transmitted-,to the c l- Y inder through them locking v plate 6.' Y, he looking plate 6 tits snugly withinthegr'oove,
and as' the latter extendsl only, part' Wayl around the plug, it follows that; when the plug is rotated, the locking plate -also'rotates and operates at all cimestov liold ltheplug exactly in its proper Aposition .witl1. relation to the cylinder, so that.as Ythelie'y with*A drawn there can be noinovement ofthe plug.
within the cylinder, therefore insuring' a smooth action of the tumblers.YA
The plug locking plate 6 is in the preseiit instance held in ing cam 7, Awhic itsfront or inner face to cover the locking pla/fe and hold it in place within its groove, and the bolt actuating cam 7 is held in place by the usual cam 8 which is secured by screws to the end of tlieplug. T he bolt actuating cam is free Ato have a turnin inoven'ient on the plug, and as before state isheld in place by the usualcam 8, and iii lposition by the bolt actut latter is counterbored ori:
locks when the cam 7,is not used cam 8 would be'counterbored to cover and inclose" the lockingplatc G. With this improvement the locking plate 6 is simply dropped into a slot in the plug and is retained thereby thel bolt actuating c am or other part secured to the rear end of the plug, the said cam or other partbeing preferably counterbored to receive and house the locking plate With my present improvement the locking plate moves with the plug, and as the retaining cam or parti: recessed to receive the plate, there is no increase whatever in the depth of the lock. Y
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangerent 0..' parts shown and described without departing from the. spirit and scope of my invention Hence fI would have 1t underl.
5' stood that I do notwish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangementof partsv shown and described, but
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is Y 1. In a pin tumbler lock, the combination of a cylinder and its plug, the latter having a peripheral groove adjacent its rear end, a locking plate looselyseated in said groove and bearing against the rear face o the c lindcr, and means secured to the plug or holding the locking plate in position.A
2- In a pin tumbler lock, the combination of a cylinder and' its key plug, the latter having a peripheral (grooveadjacent its rear end, a crescent s'hape locking plate mounted in said groove and overhanging the rear face of the cylinder, and means for locking the plate Within the groove in said key plug, whereby the plate turns with the key plug and locks the latter against endwise movement.
3. In a in tumbler lock the combination of a cylin er and its plug, the latter having a peripheral groove adjacent its inner end, the said groove extending only partly around the plug, a lockin plate fitting said groove and overhanging t e rear face of the cylinder and means carried by the plug for locking the plate within said groove.
4. In a in tumbler lock, the combination with a cylinder and its plug, the latter having a peripheral groove adjacent its free end, the said groove extending only partly around said plug, a locking plate filling said 'groove and having bearing against the rear face of the cylinder and acam secured to the end of the lug and counterbored to cover and house t e locking plate.
`In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER' F. AUGENBRAUN.
