"KNIFE 'Specification of 'Le'ttersfatent Patented 4 Dec.'1f7 1912.
Applicatonled April 18, v1911. .'Serial No. 621,736.
To all whom it may concern.: 4
Be it known that I, JENNTE M. QUIGLEY,l a citizen of the United States, anda .resident of Verona, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pocket knives.
The primary object is to provide a simply constructed, readily operated means whereby the spring may be held out of action permitting the blades being readily removed or inserted into the handle.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1, shows a view with portions broken away of a pocket knife embodying my invention. Fig. 2, shows an enlarged fragmentary part of the handle sections having the screw head receiving socket. Fig. 8, shows an enlarged fragmentary view of the opposite handle having the threaded screw receiving opening.
In my present invention I provide a knife handle so constructed that the blades thereof can be readily removed permitting other blades to be substituted, the knife being especially adapted to the needs of hunters, soldiers, and others requiring a knife including a means whereby a series of blades are made interchangeable in the same handle.
Fig. 1, shows a knife constructed according to my invention. The handle sections 15 and 16, are connected and held in parallel spaced relation by means of the pins 17 and 18. The pins are held within suitable openings at the ends of the handle sections. The handle section 15, has a centrally positioned edge entering slot 24, ending in a conical enlargement 25, while the handle section 16, has a threaded screw opening 26, registering with the conical seat 25. I-Ield between the handle sections 15 and 16, is a spring 28, having a threaded opening mid length adapted to receive a set screw 30, with a conical head arranged for co-action with kthe conical seat 25. `cured between the handle sections by irst inserting the screw 30, into the spring 28, the
The spring 28, is seend of the screw 30, projecting through the spring. The screw 30, is then carried into the slot 24, so that the spring 28, will be properly held between the two handle sections 15 and 16. After the screw 30, has been stopped within the slot 24, the screw 30, may be driven home, the end thereof finding engagement within the opening 26, while the head 30, will lind a seat within the socket 25. In connection with such a handle a plurality of blades may be used. In Fig. l, but two blades are shown marked 19 and 28. In order to insert these blades the setscrew 30, must be carried out of the opening 26. When this is accomplished the head of the screw will be out of the socket 25, so that the spring 28, can be readily removed. The knives or blades are then secured to the pins. Each blade has a straight oblique slot 21, beginning near the stop shoulder 22 and entering through the back, of each blade. After the two blades are in position, the spring 28, is carried between the handles in a manner insuring the screw 30,
sliding into the slot 24. As soon as the same v is stopped at the end of the slot 24, the screw may be driven home. It is of course under* stood that the spring 28, must be slightly bent and held under force while the screw 30, is being secured. While I have shown but two blades in connection with the modification, it is of course understood that the handle could be provided with a set of knives or other implements such as a button hook, spoon or the like.
The device is simple and inexpensive in construction and both durable and efficient in operation and the adjustment of the blades or the removal of the blades from the handle may be elected with ease, accuracy and despatch.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to -secure by United States Letters Patent is A pocket knife comprising two similar handle sections, each having a pin opening near each end, of pins within said openings to hold said handles in parallel spaced relation, one of said handle sections having al ing a threaded opening mid length registering with said conical enlargement, a set screw Within said threaded openings having a conical head arranged for co-action with said conical enlargement, and two blades each having a stop shoulder and a straight slot entering through the back of the blade and beginning near each shoulder, said slots arranged to be engaged by said pins, as and in the manner shown.
In testimony whereof I atx my Signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
J ENNIE M. QUIGLEY.
