ANCHOR.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SEELEY P. BIRDSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in anchors, having for its object, among other things, to construct the same of forged or rolled metal parts at the minimum cost.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the anchor, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved anchor; Fig. 2 is also an elevation looking toward either side of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view thereof upon line A-B of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional elevation thereof upon line CD of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a modified form of shank with the crown in section upon line (1-D of Fig. 1.
I-Ieretofore forged or rolled metal anchors have been made with the flukes constructed independently of each other and secured to gether by other parts, more or less complicated. This type of anchor, by reason of its construction, must necessarily be made of very heavy and substantial material to withstand the strain placed upon its independent flukes. The heaviness of the parts with no increased efficiency, and the manifest objections and limitations to this type of anchor, have prompted me to invent the anchor herein described, wherein the flukes are made of a single piece of forged or rolled metal and are integral with each other. In practice, an anchor so constructed will have twice the holding power and efliciency of the old style anchor and is manufactured at considerably less cost.
In carrying out my invention, a piece of rolled or forged metal is shaped at its ends so as to form the fiukes 1-1, which are then bent at substantially a right angle to the body of the metal, the intermediate portion 2 between the fiukes then becoming the crown of the anchor, a central boss 3 being formed therein and having a. shank opening 4 therethrough. Secured to the crown 2, preferably by rivets 8, is a plate 5, also made of rolled or forged metal,and having laterally projecting wings 6 at both ends thereof that are designed to keep the fiukes at the proper angle when the anchor is dragged along the bottom to enable said flukes to dig into the sand. Upon this plate is a boss 7 that is opposite the said opening 4 when the plate 5 is secured in position. The shank 9 is pivotally secured to the crown 2 by the pin 10, which projects laterally upon either side thereof and is rotatably mounted between the bosses 3 and 7 (see Figs. 3 and 4).
In Fig. 5 a modified form of shank is shown, wherein the end thereof terminates in a ball 11, as a substitute for the pin 10, this ball having a socket connect-ion bet-ween the bosses 3 and 7.
In practice, several modifications may be made in the details of this type of anchor, for illustration, the wings 6 may be integral with the crown and the shank held against disengagement by any one of a number of means, aside from those herein shown, but the principal feature of the invention is in providing a forged or rolled metal anchor wherein the fiukes and crowns are all made in a single piece of metal.
There are minor changes and alterations that may be made within my invention, aside from those herein suggested, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an anchor, the combination with a member, made of a single piece of forged or rolled metal, terminating at bot-h ends in a flulre bent at substantially a right angle to the intermediate portion; of a plate secured to said member substantially parallel with said intermediate portion an forming a reinforcement therefor; and a shank pivotally connected between said member and plate.
2. In an anchor, the combination with a member, made of a single piece of forged or rolled metal, terminating at both ends in a fluke bent at substantially a right angle to the intermediate portion; of a plate secured to said member substantially parallel with said intermediate portion, having laterally projecting wings at both ends thereof; and a shank pivotally connected between said member and plate.
3. In an anchor, the combination with a member, made of a single piece of forged or rolled metal, terminating at both ends in a fluke bent at substantially a right angle to the intermediate portion, with a boss upon said intermediate portion; of a plate, having a boss thereon, secured to the said member, substantially parallel with said intermediate portion; and a shank pivotally secured between the said bosses.
4. In an anchor, the combination with a member, made of a single piece of forged or rolled metal, terminating at each end in a fluke, with a boss upon one side thereof, be-
tween said flukes; of a plate, having laterally projecting curved win s upon both sides thereof and at both ends, secured to said member.
5. In an anchor, the combination with a member, made of a single piece of substantially flat forged or rolled metal, with the ends thereof bent or turned, after being properly shaped, at substantially a right angle to the intermediate portion to form flukes; of a second substantially flat forged or rolled metal member secured to said first member, forming a reinforcement therefor; and a shank pivotally connected between said memoers.
