FIREARM.
citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Firearms, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents a side View of arevolver embodying my present inventlon, with the sides of the handle removed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the handle and hammer of a revolver, with the sides of the handle removed, showing the hammer in a cooked position. Fig. 3 is a detached vlew of the hammer spring and adjustable plate toreceive the thrust of the spring. Fig. 4 1s a detached viewof the thrust plate. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same on the line 5-5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a central sectional view of the cup shaped washer 10.

My present invention relates to means for employing a spiral spring for the hammer spring of a firearm, with an adnistable abutment plate to receive the pressure of the spring, and it has for its object to provide means for retaining the spring in a compressed position to facilitate its removal from the firearm; and I accomplish this object by means of the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 denotes that portion of the framework of a revolver forming the handle.
2 is the hammer, and 3 is the hammer spring consisting of a spiral spring carried upona thrust pin 4 having its end 5 resting in a small recess formed in the rear side of the hammer, and having its opposite end 6 passing through an opening 4 in an abutment plate 7 held in a fixed position in the frame of a firearm in any suitable manner.
In the present instance the abutment plate 7 has its opposite ends adapted to engage notches 8, 8, in the frame of the firearm, by which the abutment plate is held in a fixed position to receive the thrust of the hammer spring 3. One end of the hammer spring 3 bears against a shoulder 9 on the thrust Specification of Letters Patent.

In order to bring the hammer spring 3 into act-ion, when the parts are again replaced, the end 6 of the thrust pin is pushed in the direction opposite to that shown by the arrow 13, causing the pin 4 to be raised into the circular opening 4 within which the thrust pin is capable of longitudinal movement.
In order to prevent the thrust pin from being accidentally displaced from the circular opening 4 the side of the abutment plate 7 next the cup shaped washer 10 is counterbored to form a recess 14, Figs. 4 and 5, said counterbore having a curved bottom to fit the curved surface 15 of the cup shaped washer 10. Then the cup shaped washer 10 is inserted in the recess 14 it will be held therein by friction and prevent the displacement of the thrust pin 4 in the abutment plate 7. A pressure upon the end 6 of the thrust pin in the direction of the arrow 13, however, will be sufiicient to dislodge the cup shaped washer from the recess 14 when the hammer is cooked, and allow the neck 12 to be pushed into the contracted slot 11.
I claim,
1. A firearm having a hammer pivoted to the frame, a thrust pin with one end engaging the rear side of the hammer, a hammer spring arranged to actuate said thrust pln, an abutment plate for said spring removably held in the frame of the firearm, said plate being provided with meansfor holding said thrust pin from longitudlnal movement.
2. A firearm having a hammer pivoted to the frame, a thrust pin with one end engaging the rear side of said hammer, a spiral hammer spring surrounding said pin and arranged to actuate the same, an abutment plate for said spring removablyheld in the frame of the firearm, and means for detachably connecting said thrust pin and said plate whereby said pin is held from longitudinal movement in either direction.
3. A firearm having a hammer pivoted to the frame, a thrust pin with one end engaging the rear side of said hammer, a spiral hammer spring surrounding said pin and with one end engaging the same, an abutment plate for said spring removably held in the frame of the firearm and having an opening for the passage of said pin, said plate having means for engaging said'pin' when said hammer is cooked and hold said, spring compressed when said hammer is in its normal position.
4c. In a firearm, a hammer, a thrust pin,
an abutment plate having anopening for the longituidnal movement of said thrust pin and a slot communicating with said opening, a spiral hammer actuating spring inclosing said thrust pin between said abutment plate and a shoulder on said thrust pin, said thrust pin having a neck adapted to enter said slot and hold the pin from longitudinal movement.
5. In a firearm, a hammer, a-hammer spring, a thrust pin and an abutment plate having an opening for the thrust pin,a slot communicating with said opening, and a recess concentric with said opening.
6. In a firearm, a hammer, a thrust pin, a spiral spring inclosing said thrust pin, an abutment plate having an opening for the longitudinal movement of said-thrust pin,
a concentric recess, a slot communicating with said opening, said thrust pin having a "50 reduced portion adapted to enter said slot, and a cup shaped Washer inclosing the end of the spiral spring and engaging said recess.
