SIDE GUARD FOB SPRING-MATTRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nev. 2c, i912.
Application mea september 1i', 1912. seriai No. 720,758.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES'T. KEYES, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Side Guards for Spring-Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Wire mattresses, and has for its object to provide in the same an improved form of side guard for preventing theshifting or spreading of the hair or other stuffed mattress supported thereby.
More specifically my improvement consjlsts in constructing said side guards so that t ey shifted out of the way for transportation, and yet may be readily positioned for use. 4
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wire mattress with the side guard in position for use. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary end elevation -showingthe side guard in one of its folded positions. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view, showing in full lines the side guard in operative position, and in dotted lines the same in another folded'position. Fig. 4 is a view'similar to Fig. 3, partly broken away, illust-rating a modified construction.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts infthe several views.
In the said drawing the reference numeral l denotes a woven wire mattress body of any approved construction, the free longitudinal edges of which are suitably thickened or reinforced, as shown at 2. This mattress is liXed in the usual manner -upon the supporting frame comprising transverse end bars 3, to which the mattress 1 is permanently attached. as shown, and the side bars 4, and is of sufficient width to project at each side beyond said side bars 4 a distance to constitute the side guards 5. At each end of the frame is attached one leaf of an ordinary hinge 7, the otherleaf 8 of which has fixed thereto the ends of the side guards 5,the same being lclamped by means of a plate 9 preferably riveted to leaf 8, as shown in Fig. 3; It will be seen that by means of this hinged connection between the ends of-the side guards 5 and the spring mattress 1, said guards .may be readily positioned vforuse, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be folded out of the way for transportation or storage in either the manner shown in Fig. 2, wherein said guard is may be either folded or otherwisey folded down against the side bar 4, or in the ymanner shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3,
wherein said guard is folded inward upon the spring mattress 1. While thenormal longitudinal tension exerted upon the spring mattress 1 and side guards 5 will usually be suiiicient to maintain said side guards in any adjusted position, still I contemplate employing any suitable fastening means, such as the links 10, connected at. their ends with the outer ends of side guards 5, and slotted at 11 near their other ends to be engaged by set nuts 12 for fastening said links in any adjusted position. llWhile VI have shown, in Figs. `1, 2 and 3, the side guards 5 formed integral with the wire mattress 1, I do not wish tolimit myself to such construction, and have shown in Fig.v 4 a modification wherein said side guard and wire mattress are entirely distinct. Thus the side "guard is made up of a section of woven wire 13 stretched 'between longitudinal bars 14,
the .same being entirely independent of the spring mattress, and being pivotally supported from Vthe frame of .the lat-'- ter by means of bars 15 pivoted at 16 to said frame and at 17 to the side guard, said guard being thus capable of movement bodily vertically into operative position, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4, orto inoperative or'transportation position, as shown in -full lines, Fig. '4. And, if desired, I may employ in connection with the pivots 16 set nuts 18 for clamping said bars 15 in any adjusted position, or may employ any other suitable means for retaining said bars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. In combination with a wire mattress body and its frame, a side guard, connections therebetween whereby said guard may be adjusted to operative position, or shifted in close relation to said mattress body and frame for. transportation or storage, and means for locking said guard in any adjusted position. y
2. In combination with a wire mattress and its frame, a side guard, and hinges conting the adjustment of said guard to operative position or for shifting said guard either inwardly into contact with said mattress or downwardly into contact with said frame. l
3. In combination with a wire mattress and its frame, a side guard,' hinges connect- In testimony whereof, I have heieuntp set ing said guard and frame for permitting the my hand in the presence of two subscribing i() adjustment .of said guard to operative pos- Witnesses.
tion or for shifting said guard either iny y Y A 7 1 Wardly into Contact with said mattress or JAMES rl' KLXLS' downwardly into Contact with said frame, 1Vtnossasz and means for locking said guard in any JQHN KEYES, adjusted position. y WILLIAME.
