Be it known that I, CHARLES J. QUINLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in De vices for Supporting Hats and Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for supporting hats and garments, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device whereby the hat and garment may be locked in position upon a support and removable only by employing a key which is held by the owner. 7 r

Another object of the invention. is to provide a device of this character wherein the key is locked in position in the device when the holding means are withdrawn for releasing the garment and hat.

WVith these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim. i

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying. drawing in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device with the garment and the hatholding parts withdrawn or in inoperative position; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the holding members extended or in operative position; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking bolt; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the key.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.

The improved device comprises a base or support 10 adapted to be connected in any suitable manner to a wall or like structure as for instance by screws 11. Connected at 12 to the face of the base or body' 10 is a hat-supporting device comprising relatively small brim-supporting loops 14: and a relatively large crown-supporting loop 15, the

loops 14-l5 being spaced slightly away from the front face of the member 10 and with the screws 11 located within the larger loop 15, so that when a hat is located upon the supporting device the screws will be covered and protected by the hat so that it will be impossible to remove the screws when a hat is in position upon the device as hereafter explained.

Mounted for rotation within the body 10 and extending longitudinally thereof is a shaft 16 having an arm 17 at one end and a head 18 atthe opposite end, the latter having a longitudinal slot 19 therein as shown. At its rear side the head 18 is provided with a circumferential recess 20 in which a yieldable stop member 21 engages whenthe shaft 16 and its attachments are in one position, to lock the arm 17 in its outwardly presented position as shown in Fig. 2. The recess 20 communicates at its inner end with the longitudinal recess 19 and thus projects across the path of a key represented at- 22 when the latter is inserted through a key-way opening 23 in the face of the base 10 and communicating with the slot 19. The key 22 is formed with a shank 24 and a lateral offset 25, the latter terminating in a finger-grip 26. By this arrangement the members 2425 are in L-shape, as shown in Fig. 6. The ward portions 22 of the key correspond substantially to the interior area of the slot 19, and a projection 27 upon the key extends through the recess 20 and engages the free end of the stop member 21 when the key is inserted, and thus displaces the latter and releases theshaft 16 and permits the arm 17 to be turned into its upward position and withdrawn into a seat constructed therefor within the body 10. Depending from the body 10 is an open garment-receiving hook 28. The arm 17 is provided with a slot 29 intermediate its ends, and pivoted at 30 within this slot is a locking bolt 31 which depends within a channel formed therefor in the face of the member 10 and is retained in position by a keeper 32. The bolt 31 is so proportioned that when the arm 17 is in its upward position as shown in Fig. 1, the bolt 31 will lie within the recess in the member 10 with its outer face flush with the same, thus leaving the hook-28 open for the removal or insertion of the holding loop or hanger of a garment. It will be noted that when the arm 17 and its bolt 31 are in withdrawn position as shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 16 with its head 18 will likewise be turned with the slot 20 presented forwardly, and when the key is inserted to release the locking member 21 through the action of the projection 27 and the key employed to rotate the shaft 16 and its attachments upwardly, the shank 24 of the key will pass into a vertical extension 23 of the key-Way with the finger-grip 26 bearing against the outer face of the member 10. By this means the key is held in locked position and cannot be removed unless the' arm 17 is likewise presented outwardly or in its operative or hat-holding position.

The improved device asherein described will usually be employed in hotels, halls, barber shops and like localities where persons are in the habit of depositing their hats and coats. temporarily, and a plurality of the deviceswill be arranged in convenient position for use. hen a party desires to leave his hat and coat temporarily he hangs the coat or other garment by its hanger in the hook 28 and suspends the hat by its brim and crown within the holder 1415. He then moves the key downwardly by force applied to the finger-grip 26 with the result of rotating the shaft 16 and moving the arm 17 into the interior of the hat and against the lower portion of the sweat-band and likewise forces the bolt 31 downwardly until its lower free end passes rearwardly of the lower end of the hook 28 and thus firmly locks the hat and the garment in position. This movement of the key likewise moves the recess 20 into position to receive the holding member 21, and the latter forces the key outwardly through the key-way 23 and enables the owner of the hat and coat to carry the key with him. Thus the coat and hat are firmly locked in position and can be removed only by again inserting the key,

releasing the locking member 21, and rotating the shaft 16 to withdraw the arm 17 and the bolt 21. This action of returning the key to position again locks the key within the device so that the key will not be liable to be carried away or displaced unless a hat and coat are deposited within the device.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and locked at convenient points for use.

What I claim is: v

1. In a device of the character described, asupporting base, a hat holder carried by the base, a garment hook depending from the base with its terminal spaced therefrom, an arm swinging upon the base and extending through the hat holder when in outer position and into a hat held therein, and a bolt carried by the arm and closing said hook when the arm is movedinto outer hat engaging position.

Ina device of the class described a support, an open garment-holding hook carried by said support, a hat holder carried by said support, a shaft mounted for oscillation in said support and provided with a stop recess, an arm connected to said shaft, and hol'dinga hat upon the holder when 1n one position, a bolt connected to said arm and closing said hook when the arm is projected,

a yieldable locking member engaging in said stoprecess to hol'd the arm and bolt in projected position, and a key operating to displace the locking member and rotate the shaft and release the arm and bolt.

3. In a device of theclass described, a support having a key-way, a hat holder carried by said support, a garment holder carried by said support, a shaft mounted for oscillation within saidsupport and provided with a recess opening into said key-way when the shaft is in one position, an arm carried by said shaft to hold a hat upon the hat holder, a bolt carried by said arm and closing said garment holder when the arm is projected, alocking member engaging the recess opening 011 said shaft, and a key for displacing said locking member to release the arm and bolt.

4'. A supporting member, a holder 'attached to the supporting member and conforming to and adapted to bear against the band of a hat, a garment hookdepending from the base with its terminals spaced therefrom, an arm swinging upon the base and adapted to enter a hat and bear upon the sweat bandthereof when in one-position, and a bolt carried by the arm and closing said hook when the arm is moved into, its outer hook engaging position.
