the body of the box and in order to permit disengagement of the flange 25 from the flange 24L when it is desired to tilt the cover upwardly, it is necessary a certain amount of plav should take place in order that the cover when released may be moved upwardly a little distance, in order to enable the lower edge of the flange 25 to clear the edge of the flange 2i, and this is accomplished by the ears having the perforations slightly larger than the pin 11, as hereinbefore explained. An effective dust and oil proof joint is also secured at the bottom by providing a flange 26 on the cover adapted to fit closely to the outer surface of the box and a flange 27 adapted to fit closely to a beveled surface 28 provided on the lower edge of the box.
Following the present invention, improved clamping means are provided for holding the cover in closed position, such means having a very effective leverage by reason of its being located a distance away from the pivoting point of the cover. These means comprise essentially, a pivoted member C extending transversely on the cover and provided with hook-shaped ends 29 adapted in locked position to engage suitable engaging means on the sides of the box, said hook shapedl ends being resilient in the direction of their length, whereby, when forced to clamping position they will exert a resilient pressure to hold the cover against the box, the point of contact of said hookshaped ends being such that in engaged position, the clamping member will itself be held in clamped position. In the embodiment illustrated, the engaging means comprise rollers 30 supported on pins 31. Itis To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN BERRY, of the city of Ottawa, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car J ournal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car journal boxes, and the general objects of my invention are to simplify and improve the construction and to more effectually prevent the entrance of dirt into the box, or oil from getting out, and further to provide improved means for rigidly clamping the cover in position and such means as will secure a maximum amount of leverage in operation on the hinged cover, the construction of the invention being more fully set forth and described in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the exterior of the end of the car journal box. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 2.
In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body portion of the box of usual conat the end, normally closed by the hinged cover 13: this cover in the embodiment illustrated being pivoted to a pivoting pin 11 supported from lugs 12 and 13 on opposite sides of the top of the body portion of the box. Perforated ears 14: and 15 are provided on the cover through which the pin extends and the perforations are preferably slightly oblong or larger than the size of the pin, whereby, slight play will be permitted between the cover and the pin, for a purpose hereinafter explained.
In order to secure an effectual dust proof joint between the sides of the cover and the body portion of the box, outwardly projecting shoulders 16 and 17 are formed on the box and embraced by downwardly turned flanges 18 and 19 on the cover, said cover being also formed on the underside with grooves 20 and 21 into which the upper edges of the sides 22 and 23 of the box take. To exclude dust at the top of the box, an upwardly projecting flange 24: is provided, preferably integral with the box and adapted to fit closely to a flange 25 on the cover, which flange extends at an acute angle to alone might be used. The pivoted member C is journaled in any suitable way, as in suitable brackets 32 and 33 on the surface of the cover, and is adapted to be moved to and from closed position by means of a radially extending handle 34:, adapted in locked position to lie flat on top of the cover of the box. In order to prevent the handle being engaged by any object which the car is passing, protecting projections 35 and 36 are provided on the cover extending upwardly a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the handle and being adapted to guard the same.
The spring end 29 is of such shape that it may be sprung into locked position by a of course evident that 1f desired the pins,
downward turning of the handle 34-, and when in locked position will exert a pres sure on the underside of the engaging means in such a way as to both hold the cover securely in closed position and hold the engaging member itself in locked position.
It will thus be seen that I have devised a a very effective form of lock for a journal box, and the improved means for excluding the dust and dirt from the interior of the box and to prevent oil from eseapingeare also very effective.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a car journal box a cover hinged at the upper edge of said box, a transversely extending pivoted clamping member on the cover having hook-shaped spring ends and being formed intermediate of its length with 0 a radially extending loop adapted to form a handle by which the same may be turned, said loop extending beyond the edge of the cover, engaging means on the sides of said journal box in advance of the pivotal point of said locking member, whereby When said each end adapted to engage the engaging means and hold the cover against the box with a forward and downward resilient pressure.
