Description
I JAMES J. nnss, or wonenSTun,` MASSAonUsETTS;
Let'terslPatent No. 104,358, dated Jane 14 '1870.
mzeno'vnn sore-@nn The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent arid making part oi' the'same.
To all whom itV 'may concern l Y Be it known that I, Janes J. RUSS, of the city and county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusette, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa-Beds; and I do" hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadtothe accompanying draw ing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of 4my improved sofa-bed;
Figure 2 represents a transverse sect-ion ot' Ithe same, on line A B, iig. 1, when the bedisfolded up in thc- `form of a sofa;
Figure 3 represents a transverse 'section'of thesame, Y
with the bed unfolded; and' Figure 4 represents a horizontal section or plan View of the lower parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to uralte and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail. Y
My invention relates to 'certain improvements. in
l sofa-beds, as will be hereafter explained.:
In the drawing the part marked .A is the. pripeipal ,l frame, Bthe back, and G the seat.
The frame 'A is supported upon suitable legs orI standards, a, and the seat() is attached to the side pieces A' of the frame, by means of hinged hars' 1),-in
` such a manner that either the front ol-' rear side of the seat may be raised with equal facility.
A case, E, is arranged beneath the frame A, as n1 dicated in the drawing, into which the sections F G are folded, and which also serres as a receptacle for thc bedding.
The case E is, in this instance, made somewhat shorter'than the frame A, so as to allow space fori the bars D and xa'tcheted supporting-pieces H between the ends of the case E and the end pieces A' of theframe.
Guide-hars or rods, I, are arranged across the frame A, just at the inner Vsides of the ends of pease' 'lhe forward ends of said rods I are secured nea-r' the upper edge of the fra-me, whiletheir rear endsarc secured somewhat lower, so that the rods pass diagonally across the case from the front to rear ,a`s indicated in figs. 2 and'3.
The rear corners of thc herhsection '11 arecouuected by means of hinges L, to slides K, which latter are arranged to move back and forth upon the rods 1 while to the front of section F is attached the section (l, by means of the hinges h,- all or" which is fully inf dieated in the drawing.
Hinged to the under side of section G is a pair of legs or standards, M, for supporting the foot ofthe bed when it is unfolded. VThese legs M can be folded back upon theV under side of the' section, G 'when not in use, as shown in fig. 2, andpvlien the bed isopcned foruse, they may he swung out to the position shown in g. 3.
.A cross-har or' transom, N, is, in this instance, arranged across the upper ends of the legs M, from one to the other, to brace and stilen them.
Attached to each end of the seat C, at a point somewhat in rear of its center, there isv a ratcheted support- "in'gsbar, H, by means of which the'seat may be held at any desired degree of elevation.
.The ratcheted bars H are pivoted loosely to ear pieces, d, secured on the lower side of the seat C, and are caused, hy their own weight, to rest upon the pins c, arranged between the ends ol the case E and end pieces A. of the frame, and, when the rear part of thel seat C islraised, the ratcbets, catching upon the pins' e, hold-the rear Vpart of the scat in an elevated position.'
A loop, f, is secured to the rear part .ofthe seat,'to
facilitate the raising of itwhen desired.
Theratcl1et-bars Henn be raised to release their holdeiipon the pins c by meansoflthe cord m, theends'A of which arc attached to the rear-.ends of said bars.
'Gord 1m passes through eyes n, at the rear cornersof the sent, and through an' eye, o, at the rear center thereof', wiiere'it is p'rovidcd'with a. hand-loop,'m,. by means ot' which the rear ends ot' the bars H can be Vlifted from the pins c for lowering the seatfQ'as bciin'e stated. O
The hed-sections l and Ur may he provided with nia-tresses, or they may be upholstered with springs, or in any other suitable manner.
The arms 1 and back B lmay be made in any desired form, and ornamented and upholstered to suit the.taste. The hed is, in this `instance, made in the form of a sofa-,but it 1nay,if preferred, he made in the forni ot' a lounge. j Y g y The operation of my improved sofa-hed is as follows:
Then the bed is i'old'ed to he used las a sofa, (the parts heilig lin position, as shown in figs. 2 and 4,) 'and it is desired to unfold it, the operator takes hold of the iront edge ot' the seat U 'and tips it up against the hack B, 'thus causing the seat to swing on the points w,` at the' rear ends ot' the hinged bars l), while its rear edge rests upon the end pieces ot' thc case E, and Vis z enonghto yadmit of the operation.
'.ihescctions 111 and Gare allowed to remain in this position while thc operator removes the bedding from the lower part oi' the case E, after which the lower edge of the'section F is'raised, which allows the legs M' to swing down, when the operatordraws forwardformer position, andthe operation is completed.
of order, and, besides, it can he very easily folded and theJ section so as to straighten the hinge b, and move the slides K up against the front part of the frame A, as shown in iig. 4. The seat G is then let down to its Y If it -is-clesircd to have the head of the bed above the level of the other port-ions, the rear part of the seat is raised in the manner before described, the seat swinging onv the pivots sc, iu the front ends'of the bars D, thereby arranging the parts as shown in iig.l 3. To refold the bed, the operation is reversed. Frorn the foregoing description, it will he seen that my improved sofa-bed contains many advantages oi" practical value. It is very compact in form and of graceful proportions, so as to be pleasing to the eye. It is simple in construction and-not liable to get out unfolded by a child often or twelve years of age,
Havingy described my improved sofa-bed,
What I claim therein as new and of my invention,
und desire to secure oy Letters Patent, is-- l. The combination, with frame A and seat 0,;of the double hinge hars D, arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The cobination, with the doublehinged seat C and frame A, of thev ratcheted supporting-bars H and. pins e, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with the flame A, inclined guide-bars I, and slides K, of the hinged bed-sections F and G, substantially as and for the purposes setorth.
4..l The combination and relative arrangement, with frame A, of seat C, double hinge bars D, ratcheted supporting-bars H, linclined guide-rods or bars I, and hinged'bed-sections F and G, substantiaily asnnd for the purposes set forth.
JAMES J. RUSS.
