RUSSELL V. BROWN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLE SETTER AND THREADER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 104,260, dated June 14, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL W. BRowN, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Needle Setter and Threader; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention consists in the device hereinafter described, and is designed to be used in connection with sewing-machines, and to operate as a gage in adjusting the needle to the machine, and also to facilitate the threading of the same after a proper adjustment has been obtained.
It is well known by those familiar with the use of sewing -machines that not only the quality of the work but thepreservation of the needle itself depends upon its proper adjustment to the needle-bar. Its proper adjustment, however, without the aid of a suitable device is attended" with much inconvenienceit not being of sufficient size to be easily handledand with much uncertainty, for the reason that the eye is unable to measure the distance with the necessary accuracy.
The needle, when attached to the machine, is held firmly in a perpendicular position, and much below a convenient height for threadin g. It is therefore, especially when a fine needle is used, a matter of considerable diflioulty to thread it, and much time and patience are often exhausted.
I overcome these difficulties by the use of a setter and threader, which consists of a flat piece of metal, A, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, a spring, B, lever O, and arm D, which is pivoted to the piece A at one end, the other being provided with a sharp point at right angles thereto.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Push back the spring B, by pressing the thumb upon the lever G, and insert the needle be. tween the spring and the piece A, which are grooved to receive it, and let the point of the needle extend downward to a distance which will enable the eye to receive the point upon the arm D, as shown in Fig. l.
The point of the arm D may now be removed from the eye, as shown in Fig. 2, and the upper end of the needle inserted in the needlebar until the screw E rests against the end. of the same, when the needle is secured to the bar, in the usual way, by means of a thumbscrew.
The adjustment of the needle is now complete, the threading remaining to be done. For this purpose I move back the arm D, as shown in Fig. 3, place the point of the same behind the needle, instead of inserting it in the eye, as before described. The end of the thread is then placed in a horizontal groove upon the arm D, which conveys it to the eye of the needle.
My device may be adjusted to different machines by raising or lowering the screw E.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the piece A, spring B, lever C, pivoted arm D, and screw E, the whole constructed and arranged in the manner described.
