FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @en 22, 1912.
Application filed December 21, 1911. Serial No. 667,204..
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that we, ROBERT V. Siiirrson and SAMUEL T. Dimmer, citizens of the United States, and residents of Denver, in the county of Denver and' State of Colorado, have invented a new and Tmproved Fastening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates generally to fastening devices and more particularly is directed to a structure which is especially adapted for securing the lines from the bridle bit 0r halter of a horse in order that the animal may be hitched to a suitable post or other support.
The principal object of our invention is to provide a new and improved device especially adapted for this use which may cooperate with any bitching post or pole, it being adapted to eiliciently perform its purpose and at the same time being inexpensive in its make-up.
i `further object of our invention is to provide a compact device which may be easily carried on the person and adapted for use with any hitching post 0r pole in order to secure the reins or lines extending from the bridle bit or halter in order that the animal may be hitched.
@ther objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description thereof proceeds, all of which is particularly pointed out and included in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specitication in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in operative position; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof on the line 2.-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The device comprises a base member 1 having an offset end 2, the said offset end being provided with a curved recess 3, the lower end of the base member being preferably provided with a threaded opening through which the winged bolt t passes.
@n one side of the base member 1 is a pocket 5 formed in any desirable manner but preferably by the bent piece of metal 6 which is secured at its ends to the base member in any suitable manner, as by rivets or screws 7.
One side wall 8 of the pocket 5 is providedwith a threaded opening through which a winged bolt 9 extends, the inner end of the bolt being rotatably secured at- 10 to the movable element 11 contained within the pocket. The element 11 is movable back and forth in the pocket and in the use of the device is adapted to be brought into firm engagement with the folded end portion of a line or rein 12 which is wrapped around a suitable hitehing post or pole 13; the curved recess 3 in the outer end of the otfset portion 2 of the base member 1 firmly engages the curved side of the postor pole 13, thereby providing a substantial bearing, the end of the line or rein being passed through the pocket preferably twice, the winged bolt 9 being then turned to clamp the two portions of the rein within the pocket and between the bottom side wall and the movable element 11. Added security is provided by tightening the winged bolt 1, the outer end of which engages the side of the post or pole 13 so that the animal is effectively hitched and prevented from moving away.
The sir/.e of the different parts of the device will depend upon the kind of line or rein to which it is especially desired to be applied, the thickness of the material which makes up the device being such that the animal is effectively hitched, the particular arrangement of the different features being capable of modification, that shown in the drawings being illustrative of the inventive idea, such changes not involving a departure from such idea.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the class described comprising a base member having an offset end for engagement with the side of a post or pole, the other end thereof being provided with a movable member for engagement with the said post or pole, a pocket on one side of the said base, the pocket being adapted to receive a rein or line passed around the pole. together with means contained within the pocket and adapted for engagement with the line or rein whereby the same may be held against withdrawal from the pocket.
2. A device of the class described comprising a base member having an offset end for engagement with a post or pole, a winged bolt adjacent the other end of t-he base member` and adapted for engagement with the post or pole, a pocket on one side of the base member, the pocket bein@v adapted to receive a number of turns of the end of a line or rein also passed around the pole, together with a movable element Within the pocket for engaging the said line or rein and holding it against the bottom of the pocket against withdrawal.
8. A device of the class described comprising a base member having an offset end with a recess therein for engagement with a post or pole7 the other end of the base member being provided with a winged bolt for engagement with the post or pole, a pocket at one side of the base member, a winged bolt extending through the side wall of the pocket, a movable element for engagement with the end of the said bolt and positioned within the pocket, the pocket being adapted to receive a line or rein passed around the pole, movement of the bolt bringing the said element into irm engagement with the line whereby the line or rein is held against removal from the post.
4L. A device of the class described comprising a base member having an oset end with a curved recess therein for engagement with the side of a post or pole, the other end of the base member being provided with a winged bolt for. engagement with the post or pole, one side of the base member being provided with a bent piece of metal whereby a pocket is formed, a winged bolt extending through the side of the said piece of metal and into the pocket, a movable element within the pocket and in engagement with the end of the bolt, the said device being adapted for use with a rein or line passed around the pole and through the pocket, movement of the said element securing the line or rein against withdrawal from the pocket.
A device of the class described comprising a base member, one end of which engages a post or pole, the other end of the base member being provided with movable means for engagement with the said post or pole, a pocket carried by the member adapted to receive a line or rein passed around the pole, there being means within the pocket for engagement with the line or rein in order to hold the line or rein secured in position.
ln testimony whereof we have signed our names in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
