Description

l W. B. NILSSUN. SHARPENING APPARATUS FOB KNIVES, SCISSORS, AND THE LIKE.

ATTORNEY WILHELM BERNHARD NILSSON, 0F STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
SHAREENING APPARATUS FOR KNIVES, SCSSORS, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Uct. 22,1912.
Application led November 25, 1911. Serial No. 662,480.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM BERNHARD NILssoN, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of lnedalsgatan 21, Stockholm, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Apparatus for Knives, Scissors, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an apparatus for the grinding or sharpening of scissors and the like.
The apparatus is provided with a roll which is journaled in a frame and against which a tile, whet-stone or any other rigid sharpening tool is held, while it is moved forward and backward. At the side of the said roll a holder is provided for the scis-v sors, etc., to be ground. By the said holder, the said edge of vthe tool is kept in a fixed position, while the sharpening tool is reciprocated to a lixed plane. This resultsin the edge being exactly even and very sharp.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view andJFig. 2 an end view of one form of the apparatus.
In the sharpening apparatus shown, a guide roll 2 is journaled in the end pieces of a frame 1. At the side of the said roll a bearing surface 21, suitably inclined, is provided in the frame and extends between fthe end pieces of the same. The said bearing surface may be provided on the frame. For forcing the shank of the scissors against the said surface 21, one or a plurality of hooks are provided; the shafts 23 of which extend through slots 24, 25 provided in the side walls of the frame, longitudinally of the saine, so that the hooks can be moved along the surface 21 and be adjusted to the length of the shank. The opposite ends of the shaft 23 are screw threaded and provided with wing-nuts 26, by means of which the adjusted hooks 22 are forced against the shank of the scissors, located between the hooks and thesurface 21, so that the said shank is firmly held, while the sharpening tool, bearing against the edge and the roll 2, is moved forward and backward. When the blade of the scissors has been mounted in the hooks 22 and the latter have been tightened, a sharpening tool (a file, whetstone or the like) is placed on the edge of the blade, against the guide rolls 2, Fig. 2. The sharpening tool is then moved forward and backward and simultaneously along the edge. After lone blade of the scissors has been ground the hooks 22 are loosened and the other blade inserted, then ground in the same manner.
The described sharpening apparatus is adapted especially to households but are used with great advantage at the barbers shops, tradesmens shops and so on for the sharpening of scissors, etc.
The apparatus may evidently be modified in many respects without exceeding the limits of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sharpening apparatus for edge tools, where a sharpening tool is forced against the edge tool and a guide roll, a slanting bearing surface for the shank of the scissors provided in a frame parallelly to the said roll, and one or more hooks extending transversely to the roll and the bearing surface and adjustably inserted in slots in the frame and provided with means for forcing the same against the said shank located between the hooks and the said surface.
2. A sharpening apparatus comprising a rectangular frame having a slanting bearing face at one edge; a roll journaled near the other edge parallel to said face; bolts passing transversely through said frame and having hooks on one hd disposed adjacent and parallel to said face; and wing-nuts on the opposite ends of the respective bolts.
In witness whereof,I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILHELM BERNHARD NILSSON.
