rl"lie present invention relates to improvements in elevating iiechanism or devices of that character in which by the action of a suitable body of compressed air admitted into aconduit or discharge pipe a stream of water. and solid materials can be withdrawn from a pit or receptacle in which they have been collected.
In the handling or transportation of solid granular' or fragmentary materials, for eX- ample,-gravel, sand, mineral, coal, coke, etc., it is customary to create a stream of water into which the materialslto vbe moved are clisclmi'ged and to collect suoli mixed water and solid imiterials in pits or tanks into which extend the intake endsof elevators of the character above referred to.
its commonly7 constructed,considerable inconvenience is experienced by reason of the I fact that it is often impossible to so regulate the admission and withdrawal of mate rial from suoli a pit or receptacle that there will not be an accumulation of the solid material of suoli an amount as to choke the intake end of the elevator conduit and frequently vhe entire apparatus is rendered inoperative by such an accumulation.
The object of the present invention is to provide a construction by which such accidental stoppage of the elevator devices is rendered impossible.

As shown the water and solid material are collected in a suitable pit or receptacle, the interior of which is divided into two com partinents by a vertically arranged partition, the lower end of which is some distance above the floor or bottom offthe receptacle.
i The elevating devices, which extend into that coirpartiiient of the pit or receptacle which is., separated from the inlet thereto by the I 1 a vertical partition, comprise a relatively fixed or stationary tube a supported by suitable means at the upper end of the receptacle and provided with a laterally extending discharge branch I), and an intake tubular section o, which is telescopically connected with the section a and extends vertically within the pit or receptacle having its lower open end extending below the lower edge of the partition in said receptacle. Within the sections afc, of the elevator tube is arranged a pipe or conduit Z adapted to be connected by a flexible coupling g with means for supplyving air under pressure. Said air conduit is connected with and forms the support for the lower intake section c of the elevator tube and the discharge openings from said pipe d are at the lower end thereof adjacent the inlet to the elevator tube.
By means of a counterbalance weight f connected with the air conduit d, by a cablee, the intake'section c of the elevator is maintained at any desired. adjustment and by this means the height of the lower end of said tube section from the bottom of the tank or receptacle can be varied as desired.
lt will be understood that in operation compressed air discharged into the lower portion of the elevator tube will create an upward current therein, causing a stream of water and solid material to flow outward from the tank or receptacle through the discharge pipe l). ln event that there Iis an increase in the volume of thel stream .of water and material flowing into the receptacle suf- .ficiently to cause an undesirable accumulation of the solid 4particles in the bottom of the pit, the intake section of the elevator is readily raised and if desired such section canbe lowered farther into the pit.
lt will then be seen that the present invention provides an apparatus of the type and character referred to in which clogging or stopping of the elevator by reason of accumulation of solid material in the colle`c tion pit or receptacle is readily prevented.
It has heretofore been proposed to make the suction pipes or tubes of dredges from a' plurality of sections telescopically connected so would accommodate itself to the unevenness of the surface on which it rests or over which it is moved in use. Also in such dredges it `lias been proposed to direct a stream of water int-o the solid matter to be dredged for the purpose of loosening it and permitting it to be carried upward through that the lowest or bottom section.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
