  • This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in typewriter keys and has particular application to a cap adapted to be placed over or upon the ordinary key of the machine in the same manner in which the resilient or cushion keys now in use are applied, said cap being preferably formed of transparent material, such as celluloid or isinglass, my improved key cap having characters raised thereon, so that such keys may be adapted for use in teaching or practicing touch typewriting
  • my purpose to provide a cap or set of caps having the raised characters thereon which cap will enable the typist to know without looking, when he is striking the proper key, this cap being not only a greataid to the beginner but will also be toundibeneficial to the experienced touch typist, by enabling him to know when he is striking the wrong key, thereby giving warning of any impendmg error.

TYPE-WRITER KEY.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. SUMMER- viLLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookville, in the county of-Jefi'erson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-VVriter Keys, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in typewriter keys and has particular application to a cap adapted to be placed over or upon the ordinary key of the machine in the same manner in which the resilient or cushion keys now in use are applied, said cap being preferably formed of transparent material, such as celluloid or isinglass, my improved key cap having characters raised thereon, so that such keys may be adapted for use in teaching or practicing touch typewriting In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to provide a cap or set of caps having the raised characters thereon which cap will enable the typist to know without looking, when he is striking the proper key, this cap being not only a greataid to the beginner but will also be toundibeneficial to the experienced touch typist, by enabling him to know when he is striking the wrong key, thereby giving warning of any impendmg error.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide a typewriter key cap of the class described, in which the raised characters may be either those of the ordinary alphabet, or of the alphabet for the blind, in the latter case, a point alphabet being substituted for the letter characters.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a cap of celluloid or other transparent material having the lower edge thickened or flanged as at 2, said cap being designed to fit over one ofthe keys of the keyboard of the ma.- chine. Each cap is formed, as is shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, with a raised character 3 corresponding to the character of the 'key'ov'er whicht-he cap fits.
l It will be noted that by means of my invention, that touch typewriting may be readily taught and practiced and further, it will be noted that the keys may be of any suitable material, although preferably transparent, and that the characters may be stamped, raised Or formed thereon in any preferred way. i
