To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES G. RonnnrsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Numbering Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Numbering devices of numbering machines or incorporated in printing presses or printing machines include ordinarily only such printing elements as are serviceable in printing numerals, and the utility of such devices is therefore limited to successive numeral printing operations.
The object of my present improvement is to provide numbering devices with printing attachments of a nature applicable to the supports of rotatable numbering devices to occupy positions between the numbering heads, and be effective for printing matter other than that printed by the said heads and at points intermediate those at which printing is accomplished by the latter.
Figure I is a view partly in end elevation and partly in section of a numbering head machine shaft, bearer, and carrier, a series of numbering heads, and a series of my attachments between the numbering heads. Fig. II is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. I. Fig. III is a side elevation of one of my attachments. Fig. IV is an enlarged View, partly in elevation and partly in section, of two of the type block holders, and the means by which these holders are adjustably supported. Fig. V is an enlarged perspective View of one of the block holders.
In the drawings: A designates a numbering device shaft equipped with bearers B, and numbering head carriers C. The num bering heads D, spaced from each other, may be secured to the carriers C in any suitable manner.
1 designates brackets secured in any suitable manner to the bearers B, these brackets being positioned in lines intermediate of the lines occupied by the numbering heads D and serving as the carrying members of my attachments. Inasmuch as the several attachments made in accordance with my improvement and located between longitudinal rows of numbering heads are similar in construction, I will, for convenience, describe in detail only one of such attachments.
My attachment comprises a carrier rod 2 extending longitudinally of the shaft A and mounted in the brackets 1, a setting screw 8 parallel with the rod 2, also mounted in said brackets, and type block holders 4 and 5 adjustable upon said carrier rod and setting screw. The setting screw is loosely fitted in one of the brackets 1 and provided with an unthreaded shank 3' loosely arranged in the other bracket. The shank 3 has a head 3 at its outer end for the reception of a suitable implement by which the setting screw may be turned, and is equipped at its inner end with a collar or shoulder member 3 that preventslongitudinal movement of the setting screw. 6 is a set screw in the bracket containing the shank 3 by which the setting screw is held from rotation after the desired adjustment thereof.
The type block holders 4 and 5 receive type blocks X that are interposed between the numbering heads D in the circumferential series of such heads, and the holders are provided with recesses 00 in which the type blocks seat, and overhanging lips 00 that retain the type blocks in the holders. The holders 4 are adjustably held to the carrier rod 2 by set screws 7, or other suitable means of fastening, and are provided with unthreaded apertures 4 through which the setting rod 3 extends. The holders 5 are slidably fitted to the rod 2 and have threaded engagement with the setting screw 3.
To mount the type blocks X in my attachment, the procedure is as follows: The type blocks are seated in the recesses of each pair of holders 4 and 5, after which the holders 4 are adjusted toward the holders 5, and the set screws 7 are tightened into impingement to the rod 2- to confine the type blocks between the holders 4 and 5. The setting screw is then rotated by the application of a suitable implement to the head of its shank, and as this screw is turned, the entire series of holders 5 are caused to travel toward the mating fixed holders 4, to effect the desired clamping or locking up action upon the type blocks, in order that they will be firmly held during printing operation.
I claim 1. An attachment of the character described, comprising supports, a smooth carrier rod mounted in said supports, a setting screw also mounted in said supports, typeblock holders slidable on said carrier rod, means for holding said type-block holders in fixed positions after they have been slid upon said carrier rod, and type-block holders fitted to said setting screw and adjustable thereby relative to the first mentioned typeblock holders.
2. An attachment of the character described, comprising supports, a smooth carrier rod mounted in said supports, a setting screw also mounted in said supports, typeblock holders slidably fitted to said carrier rod, means for securing said type-block holders to said rod, and type-block holders fitted to said setting screw and adjustable thereby relative to the first mentioned typeblock holders; both said carrier rod and said setting screw extending through all of said type block holders to hold them in alinement.
3. An attachment of the character described, comprising supports, a carrier rod mounted in said supports, a setting screw also mounted in said supports, type-block holders adjustably fitted to said carrier rod,
' set screws in said type-block holders for impingement against said carrier rod to retain the type block holders in set positions, and type-block holders fitted to said setting screw and adjustable thereby relative to the first mentioned type-block holders.
4. 'An attachment of the character described, comprising supports, a carrier rod mounted in said supports, a setting screw also mounted in said supports, type-block holders having unthreaded apertures through which said carrier rod and said setting screw extend, and type-block holders 7 having threaded engagement with said setting screw and having unthreaded apertures through which said carrier rod extends, the last mentioned type-block holders being adjustable by said setting screw relative to the first mentioned type-block holders. 7
5. The combination with a numbering device including a rotatable shaft, carriers and numbering heads secured to said carriers, of printing attachments disposed intermediate of said numbering heads, and comprising supports, a carrier rod mounted in said supports, a setting screw also mounted in said supports, type-block holders adjust-- ably fitted to said carrier rod, and type block holders fitted to said setting screw and adjustable therebyrelative to the first mentioned type-block holders.
