A TTORNEVJ.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRWIN A. DEAN, 0F NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK N. C. JERAULD, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK.
WINDOW-LOCKING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRWIN A. DEAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Nlagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a window-locking device, which has for its object to lock both sashes in such a manner that they cannot be opened from the outside, even when, for purposes of ventilation the upper sash may be partly lowered.
The invention also relates to the particular means by which the upper sash is locked, and to the combination of parts whereby the movement of the lower sash causes or permits the operation of the locking mechanism which secures the upper sash in any one of its adjusted positions.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, showing the upper and lower sash, and the relative position of the parts by means of which the raising of the lower sash releases the lock of the upper sash; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, of the meeting portions of the upper and lower sash looking toward the right hand edge of the sashes; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the planes V-V of Fig. 3; and Fig. 4: is a back view of the upper sash lock.
In order to permit the upper sash to be lowered for ventilation and yet be locked in its lowered position by the lower sash, I have devised the following arrangement. Mounted in the side jamb is a casing 22, within which are levers z, s, pivoted at a), o. The inner ends of these levers have slots in which is a pin, normally pressed outward by a spring a. At their outer ends, these levers carry bolts 02, m, which extend outwardly through openings in the casing 22. One of these bolts 00 the unlocking bolt is arranged to project into the inclined groove of a casting, w, mounted at the upper portion of the lower sash, while for engagement with the other bolt :0 the locking bolt are provided a series of openings 23, in a socket plate t, set into the side rail of the upper sash. By raising the lower sash, the bolt 00 will slide along the tapered surface of the casting to and cause the bolt 00' to be with- Speeification of Letters Patent.

drawn from a socket 23; the upper sash can then be lowered to the desired extent, whereupon by lowering the lower sash to its normal position, the belt a; is free to move outwardly, permitting the bolt 00' to engage in any one of the sockets 23, thus locking the upper sash against unauthorized movement, for the reason that it cannot be moved until the lower sash is raised, which cannot readily be accomplished.
I claim:
1. The combination with an upper sash having a series of openings therein, of a locking device located in the side jamb, said slidable locking device comprising a locking bolt mounted on the end of a lover, a second slidable bolt mounted on the end of a lever, means for connecting the ends of the lever, a spring bearin against the connected ends of the lovers and arranged to normally press said bolts outwardly and a hollow casing having an internal wedge surface carried by the lower sash for operating the second bolt.
2. The combination with an upper sash having a series of openings therein, of a locking device located in the side jamb, said locking device comprising a slidable locking bolt mounted on the end of a lever, a second slidable bolt mounted on the end of a second lever, means for connecting the ends of the levers, a spring bearing against the connected ends of the levers, and means carried by the lower sash for operating the second bolt.
3. The comhin ation of a Window-frame and sashes therein, an upper sash having a series of openings in the side thereof adapted to receive a slidable locking bolt, a locking device located in the jamb of the windowframe and adapted to cooperate with the lower sash to unlock the upper sash, said locking device having slidable locking bolts mounted on levers and having corresponding inward and outward movements, an inclined compressing element attached to the lower sash adapted to press one of the bolts on raising the sash and to release the bolt on lowering the sash.
4. The combination of a window-frame and sashes therein, an upper sash having a comprising slidable locking and unlocking bolts mounted upon spring operated levers, locking bolt, and projecting the locking bolt and being normally projected outwardly, a upon the release of the unlocking bolt. 10 lower sash having an inclined compressing In testimony whereof I- affix my signature element engaging the unlocking bolt and in presence of two Witnesses.

sash and to release it on lowering the sash, Witnesses:
