COFFEE-STBAINEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1,1912.
Application filed April 4, 1918. Serial No. 688,537.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that 1, Anna B. Evans, a citizen of the United States; residing at Cheswold, in the county of Kent, State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffee-Strainers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to coffee strainers and has for an object to provide a two iece reticulate or wire mesh ball which is a apted to hold ground coflco in a coffee pot, and will be composed of a few number 0 simple parts which are assembled without the use of solder in the manufacture or similar fastening agents. the primary end sought by this invention being to present a device of the above described character which may be manufacturml more cheaply than ordinary devices of this character.
With the above object in view the invention consists of certain novel details of Construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understomi that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specificatmm-Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fi 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view through the device taken on the line 8-8 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of fastening the wire mesh e ements to their respective imperforate bands.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the strainer is shown to com rise two reticulate members 10 and 11 whic 006 orate in forming a hollow wire mesh all adapted to contain ground miles, the ball being adapted to be submerged in a coffee pot in the usual manner, and hold the ground coffee against escape into the liquid.
In constructing the device the member 10 is formed from a hemis herical wire mesh element 12 the circular e go of which is bent to form an outwardly openin hook-like flange 13. A cylindrical imper orats metal ban 14 is bent at one edge to form an inwardly-openinfiz hook-like flange 15 adapted to engage the ange of the wire mesh memer pressure then being applied to press both flanges into binding engagement with each other and )revent separation of the parts, the parts thus being secured to ether without the use of solder or similar fastening means. The free circular edge of the metal band is bent back upon itself to form an outwardly opening hook-like flange it), and at diametrically op )osite points in this flange spaced mrnllcl slits are formed and the material ticrcbetween straightened out. to form straight tabs 17, tllcse, tabs being terminally bent inwardly and lmcltwardly upon themselves to form inwardly opening books 18.
The member 11 is formed from a homispherical wire mesh element It) the circular edge of which is bent to form an outwardly opening hook-like flange 20. A metal band 91 is formed on one edge with an inwardly opening hook-like flange 22 which is pressed into binding engagement with the. flange 20. The free circular edge of the hand is rolled back upon itself to form an outwardly opening hook-like flange 23. and at diametrically opposite points in this flange spaced slits are formed and the material thorchetween straightened out to form straight. tabs 24.
Now suppose that the ground coflce has been placed in the member 11. The member 10 is now placed upon the member 11 with the hooks thereof engaging the outer faces of the tabs 94 of the member ll. Both members are now pressed to other and rotated a half turn in o posite directions, the books 18 of the mom or 10 during this operation riding into engagement with the hook-like flange 10 of the member 11. Both members are now locked together and form a hollow wire mesh wall for the reception of the ground coffee. To separate the members the above operation is reversed.
What is claimed, is
A cotl'ee strainer com rising reticulate members cooperating in orming a hollow ball, each member comprising a wire mesh element and a band having a rigid interlocking hook connection with said element, the circular free edges of both bands being rolled back and forming outwardly opening contacting hook-like flanges, there being parallel slits formed at diametrically opposite. points in the hook-like flange of one of the bands with the material 5 therebetween tubs adapted to engage the inner surface of straightened out and terminally rolled back the first-named band. 10 to form hooks adapted to lockmgly enga e In testimon whereof, I affix my signnture, with the hook-like flan of the other ban in presence 0 two witnesses.
