To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEFAN BZSAN, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Strawn, in the county of Palo- Pinto and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Innorovements in Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to ties, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a one piece metallic casing for a tie that will protect the tie and prevent the tie from being injured on account of the vibratory movement of rails or rail plates upon said tie.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tie casing that can be used in connection with wooden or composite-ties, the casing being easy to apply, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawng, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of the tie, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing one end of the casing open, Figs. 8 and 4 are end views of the tie showing the ends of the casing partly closed, Fig. 5 is an end view of the tie showing the casing completely closed, and Fig. 6 is a cross sectional View of the tie.
A tie casing in accordance with this invention is cut and stamped from a single piece of malleable metal, the piece of material being rectangular in plan. The longitudinal edges of the piece of material are bent and reamed to provide hook-shaped edges 1 that can be interlocked. The piece of material is then bent to provide a rectangular casing that has the hook-shaped edges 1 interlocked, the casing comprising a bottom plate 2, side walls 3 and a top plate l. Prior to forming this casing, the ends of the piece of material are provided with slits 5 and 6, thereby forming side flaps 7, a'top flap 8 and a bottom flap 9. The casing is now in condition to receive the tie, which is designated 10 and after the tie has been placed therein and the casing mounted over the tie, the bottom flaps 9 are bent upwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, the side flaps inwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, and then the top flaps 8 downwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, thereby closing the ends of the casing. The casing thus formed can support rails 11 and spikes 12 or other fastening means can be driven through the easing into the tie to hold the rails thereon.
The tie casing can be made of various sizes and of different kinds of material, and it must be understood that the construction thereof is susceptible of such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In combination a tie-body, a metallic casing formed from a single sheet of oblong material having the longitudinal edges thereof hook-shaped and interlocking with each other to provide a joint, said piece of material of greater length than said tiebody and bent to form a rectangular casing to inclose said tie-body, said joint extending centrally of the bottom of said casing, said casing having the corners thereof at each end slit to provide top, bottom and side flaps, said bottom flaps bent inwardly into engagement with the ends of said tiebody, said side flaps bent inwardly to engage said bottom fiaps, and said top flaps bent downwardly to engage said side flaps, the walls of said casing being imperforate.
