APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 25, 1911.

ARTHUR mm, or new YORK, n. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, wAsHABLr: roorwnnn. WITH HEELS.
Patented Aug; 27, 1912.
' Application filed September 25, 1911. Serial No. 051,242.
To all cviwm it may concern: Be it known that I, ARTHUR HALE, a
I citizen of the- United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washable Footwear with Heels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and
exact description ,of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a pertains to make and use the same.
T is invention relates to improvements in footwear and especially to pers, the uppers of which are usually formed of felt, cloth, or other fabric, and has for its object to produce a .foot covering which will be comparatively :inexpensive to construct and yet will be readily detachable from the sole and heel, so that 1t may be washed.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed. and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :-Fi 'ure 1 1s a perspective view of a slipper made in accordance withmyinvention. and showing the stiffening member in place withthe inner sole about to be slipped over the heel portion; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the parts shown in Fig. 1; and with the inner sole also about to be slip ed over the heel portion; Fig. 3 is a side e evational view of the parts shown in Fig. 2 with the parts in position ready for wear; and, Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the slipper showing the parts in position ready for wear.
1 represents an upper of any suitable material, but 2 represents an inner sole made preferably of suitable washable material such as fabric, and 3 represents an outer sole likewise preferably made of washable material. The inner and outer soles 2 and 3 are stitched or otherwise secured together throughout their edges, as indicated at 5, leaving a pocket betweenthem,- into which fits a stiifening .member or middle sole 6 which ma be made of any suitable material suc as leather'or leather substitute. To the 'stiifsanitary slippreferably of a washable fabric,
ening member 6 is preferably secured a heel 7,]and the outer sole 3 is terminated short the inner sole 2, so,that when the stiffening member is in place, the rear edge 8 of the outer sole may abut against the forward edge of the heel 7, as illustrated. The inner sole,'0n the other hand, is made longer than the outer sole, extends over the heel portion, of the stiffening member, and is further provided with an extension or skirt 9 which fits down around the upper edge of the heel and securely holds the parts in place.
When it is desired to remove the middle sole 6 or stiffening member, the skirt 9 is lifted into the position shown in Figs. 1
and 2 and the stiffening member withdrawn whereupon the and the stifi'enin member replaced.
It is obvious may vary the details of construction and the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the above disclosure except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is 1. A foot covering providedwith an inner sole and outer sole having a pocket beparts may be washed, dried tat those skilled in the art,
tween them, adapted to receive a removable stiffening member, said inner sole being pro- 'vided with a portion adapted to cover the heel of said stiffening. member-and extending beyond said outer sole, substantially as described. a Y
2. A foot covering provided with inner and outer soles secured together to form an openmouthed pocket between them adapted to receive a removable stiflening member,
said'inner sole having a ortion extending beyond said outer sole an the mouth of the pocket, and said extension provided with a skirt adapted to partially encircle the heel of said stiffening member, substantially as described. I
3.A foot covering provided with mner and outer soles secured together to form an open mouthed pocket adapted to receive a removable stiffening member, said inner sole havin a portion extending beyond the outer sole a apted to overlie the heel of said stiffening memberand a stifi'ening member in said pocket, .su I stantially as described.
4. A foot covering comprising inner" and provided with a heel adapted to fit said 10 pocket and skirt, substantially as described. In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR HALE.
