CAMPERS KIT OR OUTFIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July30, 1912.
Application filed March 7, 1912. Serial No. 682,298.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. Wesson, a citizen of the .United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Campers Kits or Outfits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in campers kits or outfits, and is-designed to be extended or unfolded so that it may be hung or supported in a vertical position so as to render all of the compartments easy of access..- I
It is also designed to be folded into a small or compact compass for transportation when not in use.
In the drawings forming part of this application,-Figure l is a vertical sectional View through the complete outfit, when unfolded and supported in a vertical position, the view illustrating the manner in which the covers of the various receptacles are attached thereto, and also showing their position in dotted lines, when open. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the outfit when folded and ready for carrying or for transportation. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the upper portion of the outfit when supported in a vertical position and showing the cover of the uppermost receptacle swung upward into a vertical position. Fig.4 is a plan view of the outfit when about to be folded into the position shown in Fig. 2.
-Referring to the drawings in detail, a designates the back member of the kit or outfit which is preferably made of canvas, or some other suitable flexible material, and b the receptacles or boxes for containing the necessary campers articles. These receptacles are secured to the back member by means of the side portions 0 which are a part of, and integral with, the back part a. These side portions are folded toward the front of the outfit in parallel relation to each other and, as shown, at right angles to the back portion a, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3.
The receptacles b are attached to the side portions 0 by means of screws, or any other suitable fastening devices, which are designated at d.
The lower part of the member a is carried around under the lowermost receptacle 1;, as
shown at c, and the extreme end is turned up along the front lower edge of the lowermost box, as shown at Each of the receptacles b is provided on the ends and on the inside thereof with cleats or supporting strips 9 which are for the purpose of receiving the cover h which has formed therein an opening 1' to permit the user to remove the same. Hinged to the forward edge of the three lowermost receptacles, as shown at b is a second cover j that is designed to be folded outward, into the dotted line position shown at 7' and supported in-this position by means of the straps I: which are attached to the forward edge of the cover 7' at their lower ends, and to a point near the bottom of the receptacle immediately above, as indicated at m, so
that when the cover j is unfolded or turned outward, as shown in dotted lines, it serves as a shelf for the campers use.
The cover h of the uppermost receptacle is pivoted at the rear edge thereof, as indicated at 0, and on the underside of this cover is placed a mirror 72 so that when the cover It is swung upward to the dotted line position in a vertical plane, as shown at 71. the mirror will be ready for use by the camper.
It should be observed that the space between each of the receptacles, as shown at g, is such that the receptacles I) may be folded in succession into these spaces, when the whole outfit is rolled up for carrying purp0ses,said position being illustrated in Fig. 2.
The uppermost end of the backing memher a is provided with openings 1' to permit the outfit to be attached to any suitable support, as by hooking the same over nails or other devices, as shown in Fig. 3.
Attached to the back member a, by means of rivets or other devices 8 are straps 8 having perforations at one end, as shown at t, and a buckle u at the opposite end, so that when the outfit is folded into a compact form, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the straps will be buckled tightly around the entire outfit to hold the same in place for carrying.
Located transversely of the back member a (and preferably of the same material) is a strip of canvas '0 which is designed to be folded around the ends of the receptacles of the outfit in the opposite direction, and adapted to be secured together by means of the buckle w and strap :0. The carrying handle y is shown at the upper end of F 1g.
1, and also in Figs..2 and 4. This handle is for the purpose of enabling the camper to readily carry the outfit, whenfolded. I
the series of receptacles may be secured to gether in the manner shown in Fig. 1 by using only strapsor chains; and thereceptacles may be then firmly secured in place, when folded as shown in Fig. 2 by means of these straps or chains without employing the back member a at all. The invention is not, therefore, understood as being limited to the use of any backing member at all, as by omitting this member and using only the straps or chains the receptacles could be supported for use in'the manner shown in Fig. 1, and-folded up for transportation in the manner shown in Fig. 2
Without departing from the spirit and scop of the invention. v
What I claim, is
Acampers'kit comprising a flexible supporting member, a longitudinal series of spaced box like receptacles attached thereto, one space adjacent each receptacle being dimensioned to receive that receptacle, means by which said supporting member can be hung vertically from a suitable support, all constructed and arranged so that when the supporting member is hung vertically a convenient set of vertically arranged receptacles is presented, and when the receptacles; are folded severally into their adjacent spaces the supporting member can be wrapped around the whole to present a carriable unit.
