Be it known that I, JOHN l/V. HOUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fairbank, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa., have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence- Posts, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in fence posts, and aims to provide an improved and novel form of fence post embodying a reinforced plastic mass.

The invention contemplates a fence post of the above character, the reinforcing means of which shall provide a lightning arrester whereby the same may be grounded thereby eliminating this menace to live stock, particularly when the post is used in fence structures.

The invention consists of a post constructed of cement, or like self-setting plastic material, a metallic stay or reinforcing member embedded in the post centrally thereof, and plates arranged upon the post and receiving binding wires whereby a self-contained and unitary struct-ure is provided, the said plates also serving to retain the fence wires in position.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fence post embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the post. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the reinforcing means showing the parts in their assembled position. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of one of the plates, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the same.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates the body of the post, composed of cement, concrete or other plastic material of a like nature. Arranged centrally of the body 1 and projecting above and below the same is a reinforcing bar 2, the latter being, preferably, squared in cross section and pointed at its upper end. Positioned upon the reinforcing bar 2 within the body l, and spaced a suitable distance from each other, are a plurality Specification of Letters Patent.

of securing plates 3 and a retaining plate 4. The plates 3 are formed with lateral eXtensions 5, which project through one side of the body l and are stamped to provide hooks 6, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully described. Each of the plates 3 are formed centrally with a squared opening 7, which latter receives the reinforcing bar 2, and with a plurality of marginal openings 8, the marginal openings of one plate alining with those of the other plates and receiving binding wires 9. The plate 4 is positioned upon the reinforcing bar 2 below the plates 3 and is provided with marginal openings 10, the plate 4 being wholly embedded in the body l of the post.

The binding wires 9 have their upper ends secured to the upper end of the bar 2, and are preferably twisted thereabout for a p0rtion of their length. These wires are passed through the openings 8 and 10 of the plates 3 and 4 respectively and at their lower ends are secured to the bottom of the bar 2 whereby the plates 3 and 4 are securely held in position and the body l of the post more securely reinforced. As before stated the hooks 6 are stamped from the plates 3 and the openings formed by the stamping of said hooks are adapted to receive a retaining rod l1, which latter engages the bills of the hooks 6, in the application of the rod to the plates whereby the fence wire which is engaged by the hooks 6 is securely held in position. At its upper end the rod 11 is formed with a hooked terminal for engagement with the hook 6 of the upper plate 3 so that the rod may be supported in the assembling of the parts, the lower end of the rod being bent upon or otherwise secured to the under surface of the lowermost of the plates 3.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that a post constructed in accordance with the present invention forms a complete metallic circuit from the fenceA wire to the ground thereby forming a lightning arrester for the protection of stock.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
