GEORGE B. KOHLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. G.
BRILL COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
FARE-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1912.
Application filed October 12, 1908. Serial No. 457,742.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. Korinnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Fare-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in fare-boxes adapted to be used upon passenger cars and particularly of the type in which a passenger pays the fare on entering the car.
The object of my invention is to so construct the box that 011 the discharge of the fare from the receiving section into the fare receptacle it will be registered. 1
The invention also relates to details of construction of the mechanism for actuatingthe discharge device.
I11 the accompanying drawings-Fignre 1 is a side view, partly in section, illustrating a portion of the fare box showing my improvements; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22, Fig. 1.
A is a fare box having a receptacle B, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. This receptacle is mounted within a movable drawer so that when the drawer is opened the receptacle can be detached. This particular form of receptacle is fully set forth in an application for patent filed even date herewith.
C is a fare receiving section of the fare box mounted on a section A containing the discharge mechanism and the registering mechanism in the present instance. The fare receiving section has glazed sides 0 and glazed inclined deflectors c for the passage of the fare.
The bottom of the fare receiving section is closed by a platform D and pivoted at (Z to the platform is a curved closing plate D, so that when the platform is tilted the closing plate will close the opening in the bottom of the fare receiving section and no fares can pass into the receptacle without first being retained by the plate D.
E is an operating lever pivoted in the present instance at c and having an are 6 attached to an arm F by a rod E. The arm is mounted on a rock shaft F on which is mounted the closing plate D. On the shaft is an arm F connected by a link f to a lug (Z on the underside of the platform D so that each time the lever is op erated the fare is discharged from the receiving section into the fare receptacle in the body of the fare box.
G is a register of any of the ordinary types; the numbers on this register can be seen through the glazed opening a in the section A. The register is actuated from the lever E. In the present instance the rod E has a slotted lug c in which is a pin 9 carried by an arm G which is connected to the operating mechanism of the register, so that when the lever E is moved the registering mechanism will be moved forward one number. I also provide a bell for the announcement of the registration of a fare, this bell H being mounted on a stem h projecting from the casing A carrying the discharge mechanism of the fare box.
I is a carrier pivoted at 2', and projecting from this carrier is a clapper i; a spring i tends to hold the carrier in the fixed position and this carrier is actuated by a pivoted pawl 7" on an arm I The pawl is projected by a spring f so that as the lever E is moved to discharge the fare into the fare receptacle the pawl 7 trips the carrier I and causes the clapper to strike the hell.
I claim 1. The combination in a fare box, of a body port-ion containing a receptacle for the fares; a fare receiving section; a pivotally mounted discharge device for closing the bottom of the fare receiving section; an op erating lever pivotally mounted on the body portion; a pivoted lever connected to the discharge device; a rod connecting one arm of the lever with the operating lever; a registering mechanism; a slotted arm on the registering mechanism; a pin on the connecting rod extending into the slot in the arm so that, as the lever is operated to actuate the discharge device, the registering mechanism will be actuated.
2. The combination in a fare box, of a body portion containing a receptacle for the fares; a fare receiving section mounted thereon; a discharge device; a shaft; an extension on the shaft to which the discharge device is pivoted; an arm on the shaft; a link connecting the arm with the discharge device some distance from its pivot; an operating arm, also on the discharge device; an operating lever pivoted to the body portion; a rod connecting the operating lever with the operating arm of the shaft; a lug having a pin on the said In testimony whereof, I have signed my rod; a swinging arm on the registering name to this specification, in the presence mechanism having an angular slot into of two subscribing witnesses.
which the pin extends; a ratchet wheel on GEORGE B. KOHLER. the registering mechanism; and a pawlv 0n Vitnesses:
said swinging arm engaging said ratchet Jos. H. KLEIN,
wheel. N. A. BARR.
