IIVIPROVEMENT IN' STEAMENG-INE.
The-Schedule referred to in these Letters Pstentand making part o the same. Y
Beit` known that LH. E. LoNGof Decatur, in`
` thecouuty of Maconanduin the Sta-te of Illinois,
haver` invented certain `newaiid useful Improvements `in Steam-Ililngines;` and do, hereby' declare 1 that the' following is a full, clear, andwexactdescriptiou thereg of, reference being hadto tlievaccompanying` drawings fand tothe'letters of reference niaikedth'ereon, inak- The natureioflniy inventionconsists` in the con *struction and arrangement of a double engine, as will `be hereinafterlhlly set forth. l
InIoIder to enableot-hers skilled in the art to which myirivention appertaiusto-make and use the same, I a willnow proceedfto..` describe its construction and operationreierring tothe annexed drawings, in whichy p Figure lisjaglongitudinal -jv'eriieltl `section of the stearnfeylinder, "'shoiving its interior arrangement; 1 -Figure is a plan viewof't-hewhole vengine; y
.Figure 3 is a transverse 'vertical section of the cyl- `-indem;- i, l `Figure 4 is an' enlnrgel'l endwieiv of' the piston or l fshovingliead; and l i g v :Figure 5 is an enlarged side view of the salue.
" Afrpreseuts the bedof theengiua'and .`F-..B,"lthe cylinder,4 secured ,tojthe same-many suital blegnauner. y I 'lh 'e cyliuderB is, above its center, provided with a *horizont-al partition, O, set into the sides ofthe cylinderfoi'uiing the'valve-seat, the chamber D'nbovethe same1 being the steam-chest.`
. :Thepartof thecylinderbeloiv thelvalve-seat Gis,
` f bya perpendicular partition, E, divided into two chambersef'equal size, in each of which a piston operates. M, Thron'ghthecenter ot' the cylinder B, just below the' valve-seat C, passes theinaiu shaft or mandi-,e1 F,
saidshat't having itsfbearings in suitable journalsame. y Y
` :hoxe'son the bed A, or in `standards placed'. on thev 'Onftheihai'n.shuftg'F, inside of one ot the Vchambers under tlieivalvessfeat'0,'Kis'secured a pistou, G, audin `thevother chamber' is a similarypiston, G', attached 'to a hollowshell or sleeve, H, passed around that end of openings to each' of the chambers, a a being the steam-inlets, and` l' .l '.iheA valve-slides c c: are so-arranged as to alternate- `'Ihe steam enters into the steam-chest D through 'the pipe or inlet I; thence through thevalve a,
(shown open in iig. 1,) and forces'the pistonG around a certain' distance, when the changeiu the valves Vsteam first admitted passing: out through the other opening or outlet l1, into a recess in the underside of the valve-slide thence through a steam-channel, and
out through the exhaust pipe J. f
It will be observed that each valve-slide closes the outlet, when the inlet is open, and vice versa.
The pstonsG G are provided with packing-rings (l d, at the ends of' the hub-part, which rings are setup by the pressure of the follower of the outside stnffing-boxes e e. v
Theiredges are also provided with packing com-Y the cylinders that the heads will move in opposite directions.
One end ofthe shaftF is provided with a crank, K, connected by a pi-tman, L, to acrauk on the iy-wheel shattrM, and the sleeve H is also provided with a crank, N, connected hy a pitman, O, to another crunk on the same shaft;
Now, it is clear that, by setting the cranks -on the y-wheel shaft Aat quarter angles, one will carry the other over the deadpoints, each alternately, and thus cause the machinery to move uniform or even.
Ou the fly-wheel shaft M are ecceutrcs I P, which are suitably connected with the valve-slides c 0, and operate thesaruc.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I cla-im as new, and desire to secuie by Letv sleeve H, and pistons G G', allcoustruc-ted and arranged as describedand herein set fort-h.
l2. .lhe arrangement within the cylinder B of the` Witnesses:
