Be it known that IJ GILES M. TURNER, a citizen of the United, States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of l/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n' Means for.
Supporting and Drif'ving Electric Generators, of which the following is a .specification. l V
When a magneto or other current-generator is used to supply ignition current to an inter- Anal-combustion engine, it-vhas been customarily mounted uponsome portion of the bed or engine framework, and has been driven by meansof a belt or gear connection with the crank shaft or some secondary shaft of the engine. Diiiiculty has been experienced, however, in so locating and driving the generator, by reason of interference with `the Hy wheel, pulley, drive belt or the like, particularly in the case of stationary engines which are usually supplied with a drivev pulley located at veither end of the crank shaft 'as specified by the purchaser.
The'obJects Aof my invention are to obvviate the difliculty above alluded to, and to eliminatev the expense incident to aspecial support and drive. These objects I attain by utilizing either end of the crank shaftor some other suitable shaft of the engine.
The invention is applicable to automobile,`
marine, and stationary engines, but is here-l 1n shown, by way of example, as used in connection with a stationary motor.

vas by providing said shaft 3 with a socket 8 to receivethe end of the shaft 1. Any preferred means, as, Afor instance, a. set screw 9, may be used to secure the socket 8 upon thel shaft 1. The magneto framework orv housing`4 with the attached field structure is supported or suspended upon 4 thearmature shaft orA journals, and is herein illustrated in inverted position.
Vhen intended for"use with an engine employing jumpspark ignition, means may Vbe provided for shifting thevbreaker lever 10 with relation to the'breaker cam 1l. Since the cam is driven from the armature shaft, and the circuit 'breaker lever is attached to the housing 4, it will be seen that the spark may be advanced or retarded by adjustin the suspended structure about the axis of tie armature. Herein I have shown an arm 12 secured toa portion ofthe suspended structure and having a portionl upon which a` weight 14- is adjustablyl mounted.

Itwill. be seen that the arm 12 and the weight 14 'constitute means for shifting the center of grav Aity of the magneto, and that the housing 4 may be adjusted about the axis of the arma# ture by altering the center of gravity 'of' the suspended structure. Suchshifting means may be omitted 'in the case of engines equipped for make-and-break ignition;

depending upon the location specified for the drive pulley by the purchaser; and' that there is -nol supporting device or drive connection to interfere with the drive belt or the o erative parts of the engine. The combination of an internal-com# bustion engine and a Current-generator, the latterl Comprising a portion fixed to and Wholly supported by the engine crank-shaft, and the remainder of the generator being freely suspended from Said shaft-supported portion, the suspended portion having a relatively shiftable mass attached thereto.
4. The combination of an internal-oombustion engine and a current-generator, the' latter comprising a portion fixed to and Wholly supported by the engine crank-shaft, andthe remainder of the genera-tor being freely suspended from said shaft-supported portion, av member att-ached to said suspended portion and located below the axis of the crank shaft, and a weight adjustably att-ached to Ysaid member.
The combination of an internal-combustion engine, a magneto comprising an armature attached to the engine crank shaft, a housing supported by the armature, a circuit-breaker lever carried by the housing, a' circuit-breaker cam having a driving connection with the armature,and a iield magnet V,attached to the housing; and means for adjusting the housing about the axis of the engine crank shaft.
