POCKETLKNIFE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, AELIJAH DoLEs, citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Blud, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of cutlery, and pertains especially to pocket knives, containing a blade locking device.
The object of the invention is to provide a knife blade of novel and peculiar shape or construction, and a specially designed locking device adapted to coperate with the blade for holding or locking it in open position.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this applicationzrFigure 1 is a side elevation of a knife embodying the invention with the handle partly broken away showing the locking device. Fig. 2 is an elevation with one side of the handle removed, showing the blade locked in open position. Fig. 3 is a similar view, partly broken away, showing the blade held at an angle to the handle. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section of the lmife handle taken through the block grooves. Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross section on the line a: m Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the blade. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the lockingblock.
The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The knife handle is preferably in two parts 1 and 2 and may or may not have ornamental side pieces 3. The parts 1 and 2 are duplicates and have an inner off-set 4 forming (when secured together) a Closed back portion 5, of the handle, and a blade groove or cavity 6, in the front of the handle. The front and back of the handle from the olf-sets 4 are open to the pivot end of the handle by reason of part of the material on the inner side of the extensions of.
the portions or parts 1 and 2 being removed therefrom from the pivot end of the handle to the said olf-sets so as to leave an Speccation of Letters Patent. A Patented June 18, 1912.

opening 7 and the inner side of the said extensions is provided with a recess or groove 8 for side ribs or cleats 9 of the slidable locking-block 10.
The knifeblade 11 is swingable on a pivot-pin 12, and its pivot end has parallel prongs forming a slot 13 for the locking block 10, the outer one of said prongs 14 is longer than the other or inner prong 15 so as to permit the latter to pass the lockingblock in opening and closing the blade, and so that the end of the prong 14 will not pass the locking-block but will engage the back edge of it when the blade is fully open. In order to stop the blade open at an angle to the handle the short prong 15 is provided with a notch 16 which engages the corner or point of a stem 15a of the locking-block when the stem is slid into the path of the swinging forked end of the blade; in this position of the blade the prong 14 affords a thumb rest in grasping the knife for operating the blade at an angle. The blade has a cut-out portion 17 fitting over the locking-block when the blade is in closedy position. The block 1() has a lug 17a, working through the opening 7 for sliding the block. It will be seen that by reason of the peculiar construction and arrangement of the prongs they have a plurality of functions as hereinbefore described, and that the angular position of the blade will permit of its being worked in places and for purposes not accessible with the fully open blade.
I do not wish to limit myself to any particular size, shape or material in the manufacture of the knife, nor to restrict myself n pair of prongs projecting from the blade, In Witness whereof I hereunto set my and a notoh in one of said prongs, the outhzmd in the presence of tWo Witnesses. out of the blade fitting the block in closed ELIJAH DOLES.
position and the notched prong engaging the block stem for holding the blade n Witnesses:
partially open position, substantially as ANDREW W. SPEARS, shown and described. ARTHUR B. KNIGHT.
