To aZZwwm it may Gomera Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. GILMORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garinent receptacles, either permanently fixed or transportable.

It has special reference to convenient, reliable and economical means for supporting garments carried in such receptacle, so arranged that when it is desired to close the cover of the receptacle said means may be readily folded or adjusted therein out of the way.

The invention consists of the features hereinafter pointed out.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, the invention is shownin the preferred form of its various embodiments, like reference numerals designating corresponding parts in the several vlews.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the receptacle, its hinged cover being in open position and in Vertical section. F ig. 2 is a sectional elevation on 'the line II-II of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line III-III of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, partly broken away, and showing the extension piece for the hanger rack and associated parts in folded position ready for the cover to be closed. Fig. 5 shows a detail.

Referring now to the specific construction as shown in the drawings, 1 is the body portion of the receptacle having the cover portion 2 hinged thereto along a Vertical Supported by convenient means within the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof is a hanger rack 3 adapted to support garment hangers 4. Inthe preferred arrangement the rack comprises a rod having its inner end prov`vided with a supporting plate 5 fixed to the rear Wall of the body port-ion, said rod being also supported along its length by a plurality of supporting hooks 6 secured to the top wall of the body portion and conspecification of Letters Patent.

necting with the lower side of the hanger rack 3 to leave the upper side of this rack unobstructed for the free sliding movement of the hangers 4.

7 is an extension piece for the hanger rack 3 designed and arranged to be supported in alinement with the rack 3, when the cover portion is in open position.

8 is an arm projecting from the cover portion 2 and arranged to hold the extension piece 7 in alinement with the rack 3. This arm S is preferably pivotally supported at its inner end so as to swing in a vertical plane, dropping down and against the cover portion, as shown in Fig. 4, when the cover portion is about to be closed. It is also preferred to permanently hinge the inner end of the arm 8 to the cover` portion and to permanently hinge its outer end to the extension piece 7, as shown in the drawings. For this purpose the outer end of the arm may be provided with an eye piece 9, through which loosely passes the rod 7, and at its inner end with an eye piece 10 through which loosely passes a pintle 11 carried by brackets 12 and 13 secured to the cover portion.

14 is a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting connection with the extension piece 7. Means, secured to the cover portion, are provided for supporting this leg at its lower end, the arrangement being such as to permit the leg to fold up against the cover portion. In the preferred form, a socket bracket 15 is secured to the cover portion in which the lower end of the leg is detachably supported. This enables the upper end of the leg to be permanently connected with the extension piece 7 and the latter, when folded against the cover portion, to carry with it the leg 14, as shown in Fig. 4.

16 is a connecting piece for connecting the abutting ends of the extension piece and rack together when they are in alinement. This piece .16 is rotatably secured to the connectng piece 7 and makes a bayonetjoint connection with the end of the rack 8. The middle portion of the piece 16 is knurled so that it may be firmly grasped for turning, and is made of the same diameter as the tubing of which the parts 3 and 7 are made to enable the hangers to slide freely across the joint.

In operation, when the receptacle is closed the ha-ngers are supported on the rack 3 and the extension piece 7, arm 8 and leg 14: are in folded position against the cover portion, as shown in Fig. 4. Vlien the cover portion has moved into open pos1t1on the extension piece 7 is then elevated to aline with the rack 3, and the lower end of the leg is centered in the socket support' 15, thereby bringing the parts into the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The connecting piece 1G is then adjusted and the hangers, with their suspended garments, may be slid outward from rack 3 onto extension piece 7, convcnient for display or removal.

The invention is of special utility as traveling case or trunk for salesmen.

Various changes may be made from the specific and preferred embodiment of the invention, as shown in the drawings, without departing from the scope of the invention.

VVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a Vertical edge; al hanger rack secured to the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof; an extension piece for the hanger rack; an arm projecting from the cover portion and arranged to hold said extension piece in alinementwith the hanger rack when the cover portion is in open p0- sition; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting connection with said extension piece; and means secured to the cover portion for supporting said leg at its lower end.

In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a vertical edge; a hanger rack secured to the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof; an extension piece for the hanger rack; an arm project-ing from the cover portion and arranged to hold said extension piece in alincment with the hanger rack when the cover portion is in open position, said arm being pivotally supported at its inner end so as to swing in a vertical plane; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting connection with said extension piece; and means secured to the cover portion for supporting said log atits lower end.

3. In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a vertical edge; a hanger' rack secured to the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof; an extension piece for the hanger rack; an arm projecting from the cover portion and arranged to hold said extension piece in alinement with the hanger rack 'when the cover portion is in open position; means for connecting the hanger rack and extension piece together at their abutting ends; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting connection with said extension piece; and means secured to the cover portion for supporting said leg at its lower end. w

In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a vertical edge; a hanger rack secured to the body portion and projeoting outwardlv from the rear thereof; an extension piece for the hanger rack; an arm projecting from the cover portion and arrangedrto hold said extension piece in alinement with thehanger rack when the cover portion is in open position, said arm being permanent-ly hinged at its inner end to the cover portion soasto swing in a vertical plane, and permanently hinged at its outer end to said extension piece; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting connection with said extension piece; and means securedto the cover portion for supporting said leg at its lower end.

5. In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a vert-ical edge; a hanger rack secured to the body portion and projecting outwardly from thel rear thereof; an extension piece for the hanger rack; anarm projecting from the cover port-ion and arranged to hold said extension piece in alinement with the hanger rack when the cover portion Vis in open p0- sition; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and having a permanent connection at its-upper end with said extension piece; and means secured to the cover portion for detachably supporting said leg atits lower end. y
