LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
RULER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application-filed August 5, 1911.
Patented May 21, 1912.
Serial No. 642,517.
' To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PARKE SHEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rulers, of which the following is a specification.
vision of a ruler which is particularly useful for draftsmen and book-keepers and which will provide a very desirable advertising device, by having on its face a space for advertising as well as combining other advantages.
To attain the desired objects my invention consists of a ruler embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of its parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the ruler, looking upon its top or face. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the ruler from the back or rear face, and Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2 showing the manner of re taining the pads or blotters.
The ruler A is made of any desired size and bears upon its face a scale B and preferably a flexible material of any suitable kind is employed. From each end is stamped the pair of clips O and the series of intermediate alternately arranged single clips D, which receive the two sets of parallel pads or blotting strips E, composed of a series of layers to completely and snugly fit within the clips. It will be seen that the blotting strips may be readily inserted and removed from the clips when desired but will not become accidentally detached. It is also apparent that the ruler can be used for measuring purposes and that my improve- Gopies of this patent may he obtained for ments do not interfere with the use of the ruler for such purposes. It will also be seen that the making of the ruler of flexible material renders it particularly desired for the use of book-keepers as the ruler will conform to the shape of the book and permit the drawing of a line across the entire page without changing the position of the ruler and also that the blotting pad prevents soiling or staining of the book or surfaces upon which the ruler is used. It will also be seen that the clips are stamped from the center of the body of the ruler and project transversely toward the edge and that I use a pair of clips at each end and a series of intermediate alternately arranged single clips, which construction permits the easy application and removal of the pads and also provides a separate pad at each edge of the ruler.
One of the most important features of my ruler is the construction and arrangement of the clips which open outward and permit the ready application and removal of the blotters and also permit the use of two sets of blotters. Also the end double clips and the intermediate single alternate clips hold the two sets of blotters in the best possible manner while allowing easy removal anl insertion of the strips as required.
I claim:
1. A ruler having at each end a pair of oppositely disposed clips and a series of intermediate clips arranged along the ruler, and a series of pads fitting in said clips along each edge of the ruler.
2. A ruler made of flexible material and having stamped out from the material at each end oppositely disposed clips and a series of intermediate clips arranged along the ruler, and a pair of blotting pads secured to the ruler by said clips.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
