To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, -SIGWARTH MANHEIM, a citizen of the United States, andk a resident of the city of New York, kborough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Soap-Handle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to soap handles, that is, to devices employed in connection with a bar of soap for enabling the operator to manipulate the latter without placingvhis hands directly upon it.

My invention comprises a hollow handle made of sheet metal and having, in its entirety, the low specific gravity for enabling it to float when placed in water, and even to ioat the bar of soap carried'by the handle.

'A lioat 4 has generally a `box-like form and is provided with an air compartment 4a bounded by a top plate 4b and a bottom plate 4. The float is, therefore, a hollow body, and its specific gravityis low' enough to float it even when it carries a bar 'of soap. Secured to the bottom plate 4c is an anchoring plate 5, and extending from the latter are bosses 6 formed into rows and staggered relatively to each other. The anchoring.y plate 5 is further provided, upon its opposite edges, with teeth 7 and with end projections 8. The purpose of the bosses 6, teeth 7 and end projections 8 is toanchor thebar of soap and hold it securely in position,` as hereinafter described. fThe oat 4 is further provided with side extensions 9 and end-extensions 9a which project downwardly beyond the plate 4c, as will be understood from Fig. 3. The side extensions 9 are provided with slots 10 disposed in-pairs, each side extensionhavingone pair. Extending through the slots 10 and likewise arranged 1n pairs areblades 11, each provided with Aan anchor hole 12. The blades 11 kare mounted upon leaf springs 13 and for this purpose are provided with sleeves 14 which encircle the .springs and grip the same tightly. The leaf springs 13 are bent outwardly at their ends soas to form thumb pieces 15. Secured upon the side extensions `9 are sleeves 16 through which the leaf` springs 13 extend. When the parts are in their respective normal positions, they appear as indicated by full lines in Fig. 2.

A bar of laundry soap is shown at 17 and is of suchsize as to iit between the side extensions 9 and the end extensions 9a.

The operation of my device is as follows:

The soap handle is placed over a bar of soap and the thumb pieces 15 are forced outwardly so as to bend the leaf springs 13. The handle is now forced downhard upon the bar of soap so that the teeth 7, bosses 6, and end projections 8 stick into the bar of soap. The leaf springs 13 are now released and the blades 11 are forced into the edges of the bar of soap. By a gentle pressure of lthe operators lingers, the leaf springs are forced flatly up against the side extensions 9. The soap is now securely held in position, being anchored, not only by the bosses 6, teeth 7 and end projections 8, but also by the blades 11. As the blades extend in planes parallel with the general plane occulimit myself to the employment of any particular kind of soap tobe used in connection with it.

Having thus described invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is 1. The combination of a hollow handle provided with side extensions having slots,

leaf springs mounted upon said side extensions, and blades mounted upon said leafV springs and extending into said slots' for the purpose of penetrating a Vbar of soap.

. V2. The combination of a floating member vprovided with a surface for engaging a bar of soap, leaf springs Carried by said floating member, and blades mounted upon said leaf springs, said blades bein@ bent outwardly at their ends and being fjormed into thumb pieces.

3. As an article of manufacture, a soap handle comprising a hollow handle provided .with extending portions having slots therein, leaf springs mounted upon said extending portions and bent outwardly to form thumb pieces, blades carried by said leaf springs and extending-through said slots, and an anchoring plate secured to said boX- like member and provided with anchors for engaging a bar of soap.
