AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER-HEAD.
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE McLEAN Lone, a citizen of the United States, re siding at New York city, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sprinkler-Heads; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of sprinkler heads which are applied in connection with pipe systems in buildings and in which the pipes with which the sprinkled heads are connected are normally closed, the closure being normally held in position by thermostatically actuated mechanism which, in the present instance, depends for its action upon the fusing of metal.
The invention has for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive and prac tical device of this character, the action of which may be at all times depended upon by the temperature of the apartment in which the sprinkler head is located rising to such a point as to insure the melting of the fusible metal employed to hold the trigger or locking bar in position.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and'in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section of a sprinkler head embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in perspective of one of the detachable valve holding parts. Fig. '3 is a like view of the opposing member. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the trigger plate, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the deflector plate.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents the Specification of Letters Patent.

branch pipe connected with the water pipe system of the building. B, B are side arms of a bracket member which at its lower end is connected with the pipe A.
F is a spherical body, preferably of glass or other suitable material, and forms the valve controlling the outlet from the pipe A, said valve being provided with a seat for the valve and which seat may be of rubber, metal or other substance adapted for the purpose, the seat being indicated by letter E and is seated upon the shoulder D formed for its reception around the outlet opening.
The spherical valve F is held to its seat by means of the plates I and K, the lower ends of which plates rest upon opposite sides of the sphere, the upper ends of said plates being inwardly inclined. The plate I is provided with laterally extended arms I which, at their free ends, are provided with shoulders I for the reception of a trigger or releasing plate L, the plate L being at its lower edge provided with an outwardly flaring portion L adapted, when in use, to engage the shoulder I upon the arms I.
The trigger end of the plate is held nor mally against the upper portion of the inclined plate K and is secured at its upper end, as shown at M, by means of a metal which is adapted to fuse at a low temperature. The inclined plates I and K unite at their upper ends in a depression G in the center of the lower face of the deflecting plate G. The said deflecting plate G is preferably spherical in outline and is made of sheet metal of a resilient nature, the plate being in cross section substantially convexed with its outer periphery curved downward, as shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, the operation of the device will be readily under stood. It being assumed that the pipe sys tem with which the head is connected is normally filled with water under pressure and is normally prevented from escaping through the pipe A by means of the spherical valve F seated within the entrance and held in its locked position by means of the mechanism above described and as shown clearly in Fig. l of the drawings. In case of fire in the apartment which is provided with the device, the temperature within the room having risen to a point required to fuse the metal lock M, the fusing of the metal will result in the throwing out or detaching of the trigger plate L by the outward pressure exerted upon the lower ends of the said plates, the said plates I and K, having been thus released, are thrown outwardly, permitting the water pressure to unseat the valve F and the water is thrown against the with the valve upon opposite sides thereof and are held in their locked position by means of a trigger cont-rolled by fusible metal.
2. In a sprinkler head, the combination with a suitable frame and valve stopper, of
a locking or holding device for the stopper consisting of two inclined members held in their relationship by the ends in contact being confined, and the opposite ends being 30 held in place by a wedge shaped or spherical surface and a trigger plate normally secured by means of fusible metal, substantially as set forth.
