The invention has for its object to providean improved packing which may be readily placed in position and removed when repairs are necessary; which will automatically compensate for wear; and which will effectually maintain a steam tight joint at all points.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view illustrating a section of my improved packing. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the packing members. Fig. 4 illustrates a slight modification.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates a box of any suitable or preferred contour, the form shown being circular. Said box comprises top and bottom walls 11 connected by a cylindrical side wall 12 and provided with an internal annular chamber 13 and central openings 14: for the passage of the piston rod or other element to which the packing is applied. This box is constructed of suitable durable metal, preferably bronze, although I do not desire to limit myself in this particular. Located in the chamber 13 are packing members 15 preferably semicircular in form and provided with complemental. straight abutting edges 16, 17 The edge 16 of each member is located on one side of the center of the are on which the curvature of the member is struck, and the other edge 17 is located on the opposite side of said center. The packing members 15 are held in position by means of clamping plates 18, preferably of resilient metal provided with hook projections 19, the hook projections of the two members being connected by coil springs 20. Leaf springs 21 may also be riveted in the box 10 and arranged to bear against said packing member. The outer faces of the top and bottom walls 11 are covered with a thin layer 25 of lead or similar soft metal, whereby when two of the ing members located in said boxes are placed one upon the other a close contact and a tight joint is secured. The box 10, as shown is formed in two sections.
In Fig. 1 I have illustrated a slight modification which consists in providing the box 10 with a chamber 22 in which fibrous material 23 mixed with graphite or other lubricating material, may be placed, for the purpose of lubricating the piston rod, valve stem, or other element to be packed.
In practice the packing members are closely held incontact with the piston rod or the like by the springs 20 and 21, said springs yielding sufficiently to permit movement of the piston rod but at the same time maintaining sufficient tension to provide a steam tight joint. It will be noted that the arrangement illustrated and described is exceedingly simple and may be readily ap plied or placed in position and may be readily removed when repairs are necessary. The arrangement of the springs is such that all wear is automatically taken up.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described an operative manner of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, or all of the forms of its use, what I claim is 1. A packing of the character described comprising a sectional box provided with an internal chamber and having openings in its sides, packing members located in said chamber, clamping members also located within said chamber and surrounding said packing members, the ends of each clamping member being opposite the ends of the other clamping member, and resilientc0nnecting means exerting an equal tension on the opposed ends of said clamping members to maintain a uniform tension on the latter.
2. A packing of the character described comprising a box provided with an internal chamber and openings in its sides, packchamber, clamping members also located in said chamber and surrounding said packing members, said clamping members being provided with opposed hook-like ends, and coil springs of equal size connecting the opposed ends of said clamping members to maintain a uniform tension on the latter.
8. A packing of the character described comprising a sectional box provided with an internal chamber and having openings in its sides, packing members located in said chamber, clamping members also located in said chamber and surrounding said packing members, the ends of each clamping member being opposite the ends of the other clamping member, resilient connecting means exerting an equal tension on the opposed ends of said clamping members to maintain a uniform tension on the latter, and spring plates secured within said chamher and engaging said clamping members.
l. A packing of the character described comprising a box provided with a packing chamber, a lubricating chamber, and openings in its sides, lubricating material in said lubricating chamber, packing members located in said packing chamber, clamping members also located in said packing chamher and surrounding said packing, the ends of each clamping member being opposite the ends of the other member, and resilient connecting means exerting an equal tension on the opposed ends of said clamping members to maintain a uniform tension on the packing.
5. A packing of the character described comprising a box having an annular chamber and openings in its sides, a covering of soft metal for the sides of said box, and packing means carried by said box.
