Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 9, 1912. Serial No. 670,183.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND E. MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of my invention are to provide:first, a quick acting wrench having an adjustable jaw that can be easily and quickly shifted upon the shank of the wrench relatively to the fixed j aw of the wrench, for gripping a nut or other object. Second, a wrench having a shiftable jaw that can be easily and quickly locked in an adjusted position, the locking mechanism being inclosed within the adjustable jaw whereby it is not liable to injury when the wrench is roughly handled. Third, a wrench consisting of comparatively few parts that are inexpensive tomanufacture, durable, and highly efficient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the wrench with the face plate of the adjustable jaw removed, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the wrench, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, taken onthe line III--III of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the locking members of the wrench.
The wrench comprises a shank 1 rectangular in cross section and having the outer end thereof provided with a fixed jaw 2, while the inner end of the shank has side plates 3 riveted or otherwise secured, as at 1 to the shank 1, said side plates and said shank providing a handle. The front side of the shank 1, between the fixed jaw 2 and the handle of the wrench, is provided with transverse teeth 5. Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw body 6 having a detachable face plate 7 that is retained in engagement with the jaw body 6 by screws 8 or other fastening means. The detachable face plate 7 permits 0f the adjustable jaw being placed in engagement with the shank and the mechanism assembledwithin said adjustable jaw. Besides the adjustable jaw body 6 having a groove 9 providing clearance for the shank 1, said jaw body has recesses 10 and a longitudinal groove 11. Revolubly mounted within the recesses 10 by transverse pins 12 are pinions 13 meshing with the teeth 5 of the shank 1. Revolubly mounted in the groove 11 by a transverse pin 14 is a large pinion 15 that meshes with the pinions 18. Pivotally mounted within the groove 11 by transverse pins 16 are oppositely disposed locking members 17, said members having transverse barrels 18 to receive the pins 16. The members have toothed inner ends 19 to engage the large pinion 15 and the outer ends of said members are bent toward each other, as at 20 and provided with reduced portions or finger pieces-21. Oppositely disposed walls of the groove 11 are provided with recesses 22 and mounted in said recesses are coiled compression springs 23, said springs engaging the locking members 17 and retaining said members normally in engagement with the large pinion 15. By inserting the fingers within the open end of the groove 11, the finger pieces of the locking members 17 can be pressed together to move the inner ends of said members out of engagement with the large pinion 15. When the large pinion 15 is released, the small pinions 18 are free to revolve against the teeth 5, which constitute a rack in connection with the shank 1. The adjustable jaw body can be freely moved upon the shank 1 in either direction, and after having been positioned, the oppositely disposed spring pressed and pivoted locking levers 17 can be released by the fingers, whereby said members will lock the large pinion 15 and prevent the small pinions from revolving, consequently the adjustable jaw body will be held relatively to the shank 1.
I attach considerable importance to the fact that the locking members and the mechanism associated with said members are housed within the adjustable jaw body and are not exposed and liable to injury when the wrench is roughly handled.
While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a wrench, the combination with a shank having a rack, and a fixed aw carried by one end thereof, of an adjustable jaw body slidably mounted upon said shank and having a detachable face plate, said jaw body having recesses formed therein in communication with a longitudinal groove in .said jaw body, small pinions revolubly mounted in the recesses of said jaw body and meshing with the rack of said shank, alarge pinion revolubly mounted in the groove of said jaw body and meshing with said small pinions, and pivot-ed spring pressed locking members arranged within the groove of said jaw body and engaging said large pinion for locking said pinion against rotation in either direction.
