PAPER-DISPENsIlvG APPARATUS.
To all whom it may conccm:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH RYDQUrsT, of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Dispensing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin` a part of this specification, and to the re erence-numerals marked thereon.
rIhe present invention relates to a paper dispensing apparatus, and has for its object to provide a mechanism for permitting re-- moval of paper in small quantities from a continuous roll, the movement of the paper 'being controlled by a feeding device which is normally locked against movement, the feeding device being adapted to be unlocked by a manual operation and to feed a limited amount of paper, determined by the relocking of the feeding device.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an apparatus, illustrating one embodiment of the invention, and showing the feeding roll released; Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the position of the parts when the feeding roll has been partially rotated lby removal of the paper; Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the position of the parts with the feeding roll locked against movement; Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the casing with the cover open; Fig. 5 is a detail view of the locking means for preventing reverse movement of the feeding roll; Fig. 6 is a 'sectional view on the line a-a of Fig. 1 with parts in elevation, and Fig. 7 is a similar sectional view, looking in the opposite direction.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several figures indicate the same parts.v
The invention, as herein embodied, is illustrated in connection with a casing comprising a base 1 having outwardly extending slotted brackets 2 which support the paper-containing roll. Hinged to the base 1 isA the cover 3 which is provided with spring-controlled pivoted arms 4, adapted to engage the ends of the paper-containing roll shaft and serving to force the paper Specification of Letters Patent.

downwardly into engagement with the feedmg roll.
5 is a lock which may be of any convenlent design, adapted to hold the cover in engagement with the base 1. v
. T he feeding device of the present embodiment comprises a roll 6 which carries at one end a locking member, shown as a springcontrolled lever having an outwardly extendlng arm 7 and an inwardly extending arm 8, the spring acting to normally force the arm 7 outwardly. vThe feeding .roll is loosely mounted on a shaft 9 on which isl also journaled loosely a sleeve 10 to which is fixed a cam wheel 11 which constitutes the releaslng means. Arranged loosely on the sleeve 10 is the locking disk 12 which has a pin and slot connection with the cam wheel 11 and is provided with a recess 18 arranged between the innermost and outermost points of the continuous cam-shaped periphery of the disk. The cam wheel 11 is provided with a plurality of cam surfaces 14, which operate, when the cam wheel is rotated, to move the arm 8 ofthe locking lever out of engagement with the recess 13 of the locking dlsk. Arranged4 circumferentially of the feeding roll and in proximity to the end thereof is a ring 15 which is cut-away to form a plurality of recesses arranged to receive the outwardly extending arm 7 of the locking lever, and thereby prevent movement of the feeding roll.
In operation, assumin the parts to be in the position shown in ig. 3, the feeding roll being locked, the hand piece 16, secured to the sleeve 10, .is turned, causing a--rotacam wheel 11 until it assumes a position of the arm 8 with locking disk 12 ,causes the latter to move relatively to the such as shown in Fig. 2. The paper will be free to feed until the feeding roll moves around to a point where the arm 8 a ain drops into the recess 13, and locks, as in ig. 3. It is only necessary that the hand piece be operated sufciently to remove the arm 8 from the recess 13, but if it is turned farther,
the feeding roll Will be 'actuated by engagement of the locking disk 12 Witl". the arm4 the paper may not be returned about the,
containing-roll there is provided a series of rotary brushes 17 Which are arranged on a shaft 18, revolving in the opposite direction to feeding roll G and operated therefrom by means of gears 19 and 20 mounted, respectively, on the shaft 18 and feeding rroll 6.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a paper dispensing apparatus, the combination-With a paper feeding device, of an automatically operated locking member carried by the feeding device and movable relatively thereto, and manually controlled releasing means for actuating the locking member to permit movement of the feeding device.
2. In a paper dispensin apparatus, the combination with a paper ceding device, of an automatically operated locking member carried by the feeding device and movable relatively thereto, releasing means adapted to move with and independently of the feeding device.
3. In a paper dispensing apparatus, the combination with a paper feeding roll, a stationary stop arranged in proximity to the feeding roll, an automatically operated locking member carried by the feeding roll and movable relatively thereto to engage said stationary sto and manually controlled releasing means or moving the locking member out of engagement with the stationary stop to permit movement of the feeding roll. i
4. In a paper dispensing apparatus, the combination with a paper feeding roll, a stationary stop arranged in proximity to the feeding roll, a spring-controlled locking lever pivoted to t-he feeding roll, an arm lcarand manually controlledv ried by the locking lever arranged to engage the stationary stop, an additional arm carried. by the locking lever, a manually controlled cam Wheel in engagement with the last mentioned arm, and a recessed disk having limited movement relatively to the cam Wheel.
5. In a paper dispensing apparatus, the combination With a paper feeding roll, a stationary stop arranged in proximity to the feeding roll, a spring-controlled locking lever pivoted to the feeding roll, an arm carried by the locking lever arranged to engage the stationary stop, an additional arm carried by the locking lever, and manually controlled releasing means in engagement with Ihe last mentioned arm.
6. In a paper dispensing apparatus, the combination with a paper feeding roll, of a locking member carried by the feeding roll and movable relatively thereto, and manually controlled releasing means arranged for coperation with the locking member to permit a limited movement of the feeding roll.
7. In a paper l`dispensin apparatus, the combination with a paper eeding roll, of a locking member carried by tl1e` feeding roll and movable relatively thereto, and a manually controlled releasing member adapted to be operatively connected with the locking member, sald releasing member being arranged for movement With and independently of the feeding roll.
8. In a paper dispensing apparatus, the combination with the base of a casing, of a cover hinged to the base, brackets carried bythe base for 'supporting a roll of paper, a feeding roll mounted 1n the cover and adapted to engage the roll of paper when the cover is closed, the feeding roll bein normally locked against movement, an means supported by the cover for releasinO' the feeding roll and permitting a limited movement of the same.
