Description

J. H. JENKINS.
GRANITE CHISEL. APPLICATION FILED JULY 1-; 1911.
I Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
' WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HENRY JENKINS, OF MOUNT VERNON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE JENKINS- PIRIE IOOL COMPANY, OF BARR-E, VERMONT.
GRANITE-CHISEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 1, 1911.
' Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
Serial No. 636,359.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. J ENKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Granite-Chisel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to stoneworking tools, and more particularly involves an improved granite surfacing tool.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved surfacing chisel of simple construction and few parts, having means for holding a plurality of blades securely in position, the device presenting an improved form of construction which is extremely efficient in operation.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref-- erence indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the chisel; Fig. 2 is an end view, the securing means being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking key.
The tool comprises a holding member 1 in the form of a solid box having a recess therein, of sufficient size to accommodate the upper ends of a number of single chisels 2, 3, 4, etc. These several chisels are preferably of identical construction and of equal length, so that when placed side by side within the holder, their cutting edges will be adjacent each other. As a securing means for holding the chisels in position, I use a tapered locking key 5, which extends transversely of the recess in the holder, suitable openings being provided in the sides of the holder to permit the key to enter therein; each of these openings communicates with the recess so that the flat side 6 of the key will rest tightly against one side of the end chisel 2 by driving it inwardly; the chisels 2, 8, a, etc, are then tightly wedged together and held securely in the holder.
By making the holder 1 of single construction, I am able to provide a tool of great strength, thereby adapting it to a great variety of uses, and I am also enabled to produce it at a low cost of manufacture.
It is to be noted that by making the looking key tapered and by positioning it at an angle to the sides of the holder I have set forth a construction which insures the chisels being securely held in place as the blow on the cutting edges of these chisels, when in use, will tend to keep the key tightly locked in place and the upper ends of the chisels within the holder.
, The upper end 7 of the holder 1 may be of any desired form and construction adapted for connection to any suitable form of handle, or the handle may be entirely omitted, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described comprising a holder, a recess in the holder, a plurality of blades contained within the recess, openings in opposite sides of the holder, the openings communicating with the said recess, together with a tapered locking key extending through the said openings, the intermediate portion of the key being in engagement with the end blade, the said key extending upwardly with reference to the bottom of the holder.
2. A device of the class described comprising a holder, a recess in the holder, a number of blades contained in the recess, openings of different sizes in the opposite sides of the holder and communicating with the recess, the smaller opening being at a higher elevation than the larger one, together with a tapered locking key entering the said openings, the intermediate portion thereof being in engagement with the end blade whereby as the device is in use the impact of the blades will tend to maintain the key tightly in engagement with the said blade.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
