NIGHT-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. as, 1912.
Application filed September 13, 1911. Serial N o. 649,038.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY G. VOIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Night-Latches, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to locks, and is particularly concerned with an improved com* bined night latch and Cylinder lock.
The objects of the invention are to provide a construction which may be adjusted to a door after simply boring a hole through the door. p
A further object is to provide for the adjustment of a cylinder lock mechanism according to the thickness of the door; to so combine the cylinder lock with the night latch that the former may be readily adjusted upon the latter for right or left doors.
The invention further contemplates a simple and economical construction for the purpose intended.
Vith these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l shows a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of a door with my improved lock attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a face view of the cylinder lock mechanism attached to a door; Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the cylinder lock mechanism, and Fig. 4L is a side elevation of the cylinder lock mech* anism detached from the night latch mechanism.
In the embodiment of my invention herein selected for illust-ration, l indicates the casing of a night latch mechanism of any desired construction having a latch bolt 2 and a rotatable operating knob 3 therefor. Upon the rear cover plate 4 of the night latch mechanism are mounted two adjusting screws 55. The cylinder lock comprises a face plate 6, a pin cylinder 7 and a pin tumbler casing S at the rear end of which is formed a yoke 9 perforated at 10-10 to receive the adjusting screws 5. A key plug l1 is secured to the Cylinder by means of a washer 12, and the key plug carries a rollback stem 13 adapted to engage the roll-back of the latch 2.
In assembling the parts and mounting the lock on a door, the yoke 9 is placed over the adjusting screws 5 andthe cylinder lock mechanism .is adjusted relatively to the night latch to accord with the thickness of the door, and is held in such adjustment by lock nuts 14. A simple circular hole 15 is then bored in the door, and the Ipin cylinder inserted therein. A finishing ring 16 may be attached to the outer side of the door to impart the pro-per finish to the cylinder lock. n
The cylinder' lock mechanism is arranged centrally longitudinally of the night latch mechanism so that should it be desired to change the lock from a left to a right hand door, the same may be done by simply removing the cylinder lock mechanism from its adjusting screws, giving it a half turn, and remounting it on said screws.
While I have herein described a particular embodiment of my invention, it should be understood that the same may be altered in detail and relative arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. In a mechanism of the character described, a night-latch mechanism, a cylinder lock, means for rigidly connecting said parts at various positions of adjustment relatively to each other whereby said parts may be simultaneously applied to a door from one side, said connecting means including means whereby said cylinder lock may be inverted to permit said mechanism to be applied to right orlefthand doors.
2. The combination with a night-latch mechanism having a tiXed back-plate, of a pair of'screws carried by said back-plate, a cylinder lock mechanism mounted on said screws, and means for adjusting said cylinder lock mechanism upon said screws and relatively to said night-latch mechanism to accord with the thickness of the door to which said latch is to be applied, said parts being arranged whereby the assembled structure may be bodily applied to a door from one side thereof.
3. The combination with a nightslatcih mechanism including a bolt and rotatable bolt operator, of a cylinder lock mechanism including a concentric key-plug and roll back stem, said bolt operator and stem being in alinement, means for rigidly connecting said cylinder locking mechanism to said night-latch mechanism, including means for adjustment, whereby said parts may be appli-ed to doors of different thicknesses and may be reversed for right and left-hand doOi-s, and whereby said parts may be simultaneously applied to a door from one side thereof.
4. In a mechanism of the character described, a night-latch mechanism, a cylinder lock mechanism, a screw rigidly Carried by one of said parts and projecting toward the l0 other, said last-mentioned part being slidable On said screw, and a lock nut for locking said last mentioned means On said screw at di''eient positions of adjustment.
