To all whom t may concern Be it known .that I, FonEs'r EUGENE SIG- GINS, a citizen of the United States of America, residingl atv Clarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of Test Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Canes and Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying' drawing.

This invention relates to a combination cane and umbrella, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a collapsible casing that can be utilized for inclosing an umbrella, whereby the umbrella can be used as a cane, or with the casing in a collapsed position as the handle of the umbrella.

Another object of this invention is to provide an umbrella with a sectional handle that permits of the umbrella being easily converted into a walking stick, the umbrella being inclosed and protected whereby the cover thereof cannot be torn or injured.

A further object of this invention is to provide a combination cane and umbrella consisting of comparatively few parts, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, and highly efficient for either purpose for which the device is employed.

I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of a cane or walking stick in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 is an elevation of an umbrella showing the handle thereof in section and the casing collapsed, Fig. t is an enlarged detail sectional View of the handle of the umbrella, Fig. 5 is a. similar view showing the casing collapsed within the handle, Fig. 6 is a sectional View of the tip of the handle, Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line VII- VII of Fig. 4, Fig. 8 is a plan of a nut adapted to form part of the handle of the cane or umbrella, and Fig. 9 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line IX-IX of Fig. 5.

A combination cane and umbrella in accordance with this invention comprises an umbrella stick or rod l having the upper end thereof screw threaded, as at 2 and the lower end thereof provided with a tip 3. Adjacent to the tip 3 there is a notch 4f and this notch supports ribs 5 having a cover 6. The ribs 5 and the cover G are of a conventional form and associated with these ribs and cover there are a runner and spreaders.

Detachably mounted upon the screw threaded end 2 of the stick or rod l are circular nuts 7 and 7EL and these nuts are exteriorly screw threaded to receive the interiorly screw threaded end of a cylindrical handle S. The upper end of the handle S is interiorly screw threaded, as at 9 and eXteriorly screw threaded, as at 10, the last mentioned threads permitting of a cap 1l being detacliably mounted upon the upper end of the stick or rod l.

Arranged within the cylindrical handle 8 are a plurality of telescopic casing sections l2, said sections having the upper ends thereof eXteriorly screw threaded and the lower ends thereof interiorly screw thread ed. The sections gradually decrease in diameter and are arranged in a stepped order, whereby after the nut 7 is removed, the sections l2 can be shifted to an eX- tended position to inclose the cover 6 of the umbrella. As the sect-ions are extended, the upper eXteriorly threaded end of one sect-ion is screwed in the interiorly threaded end of an adjoining section, and the section of the least diameter is connected to the notch 4L by a set screw 13.

Vhen the sections l2 of the telescopic casing are housed within the cylindrical handle, the nut 7 is screwed in the lower end of the cylindrical handle to retain the sections within said handle, also to provide means for connecting the stick or rod 1 to the handle of the umbrella. The nut 7El serves the same purpose in the upper end of the handle for holding the upper end of the stick or rod l. To facilitate an adjustment of the nuts 7 and 7a, said nuts have the upper faces thereof provided with a recess 14 to receive a spanner wrench or other instrument.

As a cane, the umbrella is completely inclosed by the handle S and the telescopic casing, and as an umbrella, the telescopic casing is compactly arranged within the cylindrical handle and does not interfere with the raising or lowering of the cover 6.

The telescopic casing and the handle S can be made of light and durable metal and the exterior of the casing 8 is susceptible to any desired ornamentation.

What I claim is A combined cane and umbrella comprising a stick having upper terminus thereof screw threaded and further having a screw threaded portion at a point removed from its upper terminus, a cover and ribs therefor connected to said stick, a cylindrical handle having interior screw threads at each end thereof and further having its` outer end formed With peripheral threads, a nut normally engaging with the interior sorer threads at the outer end of the handle and provided with a centrally arranged opening having the Wall thereof screw threaded for the recept-ion of the threads at the upper end of the handle When the nut engages with the interior threads at the end of said handle, said nut capable of being secured to the interior screw threads at the inner end of the handle, said threaded opening of 4said nut adapted to receive the threaded portion of the stick When the nut is at the inner end of the handle, said nut `provided With means to facilitate its removal from either end of the handle, a telescopic sectional easing capable of being positioned in said handle and adapted to have the section of smallest diameter connected to the stick When said casing is extended thereby inelosing the umbrella cover.
