UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. SIMPSON, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
BEAGH-COASTER.
Application filed November 14, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SIMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and produced a new and original device entitled a Beach-Coaster, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in beach coasters, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple construction which will be inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, strong and durable, although very light, so that the user may readily carry the same into the surf and place it upon the water for coasting to the beach.
In beach coasting the user, walks into the surf a considerable distance, say for instance until the depth of the water is equal to the height of the users chest, at which time the board is quickly placed upon the surface of the water, the user jumping thereon, then the action of the breakers and the currents of water will cause the coaster to carry the user to the beach.
It is generally found desirable in coasting to place the coaster upon the water directly in front of a breaker, so that said breaker will strike against the users back to assist in the propulsion and at the same time, the action of the breaker upon the under side of the coaster will skim it along in a manner somewhat similar to a flat object thrown into the water, so that said object hits the water with its flat face.
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a beach coaster made in accordance with my improvement, and Fig. 2, an enlarged transverse sectional view thereof.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents the body of the coaster formed of a suitable fiat material such as a board which may be of any desired shape or Specification of Letters Patent.

configuration and of sufficient width and length to comfortably accommodate the user of the coaster. The front end of this body, although not essential, is preferably turned up as at 3, so as to reducethe resistance and cause it to glide over the water with the tendency to raise itself by its action against the water. The body is bound with a suitable tube 4, of suitable material, preferably rubber, and this tube is securely fastened to the edges of the body, said tube, especially while in use, contains a suitable buoyant element such as air. At the turned up end or head of the coaster are mounted two brackets 5, having mounted therein the hand-rail 6, which the user may hold on to while coasting, to prevent him from being accidentally thrown from the coaster by the action of the breakers.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a very light and etlicient beach coaster has been devised which may be used by any person with ordinary strength and having no obstructions on the bottom thereof to come in contact with any object until it reaches the beach.
Of course I do not Wish to be limited to the exact details of construction and combination of elements as here shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is-
In a beach coaster, a wooden body formed from a relatively thin board having one end curved upward to form a head and a tube secured to the edges of the body and entirely surrounding said body.
