I S AES ALBERT S. WALIDREP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GAR-COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.9, 1912.
Application filed August 18, 1910. Serial No. 577,787.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT S. VVALonuP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to car couplers, and more particularly to a safety attachment therefor in the form of improved knuckles adapted to prevent the couplers from dropping and disengaging, should the draw bars become broken or otherwise disengaged from their supports.
My object is to provide the knuckles with parts which will be operative at all times and yet yield, should the draw heads come together when the knuckles are closed.
Vith the foregoing in mind, my invention resides in the features of construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1, is a side elevation of coupled draw heads provided with my improvements. Fig. 2, is a similar view of the same abutting one another when the couplers are brought together with the knuckles closed. Fig. 3, is an elevation of one of the knuckles, and, Fig. 4, is a vertical section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to these figures, the draw heads 1, at the ends of the draw bars 2, have, as usual, the knuckles 3, pivoted thereto, and having a tail l which is engageable by the locking device (not shown) in the ordinary manner.
In accordance with my invention, the lower ends of the knuckles 3 are extended below the draw heads 1, and provided with projections 3 upon their lower ends to extend within the recesses at the upper ends of the extension parts 5, and apertured to receive a pivot pin 5, projecting also through portions of the said parts 5, to form a hinge and pivot the parts 5, for swinging movement. The end of the projection 3 of each of the knuckles is beveled to conform with the beveled base of the recess of its pivoted part 5, so as to prevent the latter from swinging except in a direction toward the draw head, and said part 5, is normally held in vertical alinement with the knuckle by means of its weighted arm 7, forming an extension of its lower flange 6. In this manner, when the two draw heads come together as shown in Fig. 1, and properly lock, the pivoted part 5 of each, is in position so that its flange will receive the draw head of the opposite coupler, should its draw bar become broken or otherwise detached from its supports (not shown). In like manner, should two draw heads come together with their knuckles closed, the flanges 6, striking one another, will cause the extension parts 5, to swing away from one another as shown in Fig. 2 and thus prevent fracture of these parts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim,
1. In a car coupler, the combination with a draw head and knuckle, of an extension part pivoted to the lower end of the knuckle to swing in a direction toward the draw head, a coupler support carried by said extension part.
2. In a car coupler, the combination with a draw head and knuckle, of an extension part pivoted to the lower end of the knuckle to swing in a direction toward the draw head, and means to limit the movement of said extension part in the opposite direction, said extension part having a lower coupler supporting flange.
3. In a car coupler, the combination with a draw head and knuckle, of an extension part for the knuckle, said knuckle having a lower apertured projection provided with a beveled end, and said extension part having an upper recess to receive said projection, and provided with a beveled base to conform to said projection and limit movement of the extension part in one direction. and a pin extending through portions of said extension part and through said knuckle projection to form a hinge, said extension part having a lower coupler supporting flange provided with a weighted arm.
In testimony whereof I afflx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
