and head of the rail 3, said switch rail de- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. CUMMINS, fleeting the movement of'rolling stock, somea citizen of the United States of America, what similar to an ordinary switch tongue. residing at Hunt, in the county of Livings- The reference numeral 9 denotes a section so ton and State of New York, have invented of rail mounted upon the ties or sleepers and certain new and useful Improvements in disposed at an angle relatively to the rails 2 Crossovers for Rails, of which the following and 3, one end of said rail abutting the end is a specification, reference being had thereof a switch rail 4 and the opposite end ex in to the accompanying drawing. tending into proximity to the rail 2. 5
This invention relates to crossovers for The'reference numeral 10 denotes a crossrails, and the primary object of my invenover rail having the base flanges thereof tion is to provide a crossover that can be mounted upon the ties and one end thereof easily placed in position to permit of a abutting the end of the rail 9. The crosstrain or car passing from one track to anover rail has theweb .12 thereof gradually other, whereby the train or car can easily increasing in depth toward the rail 2 and pass around a wreck, derailment, .washout decreasing in depth as the rail leaves the rail or other obstruction that would otherwise 2, said web and the base flange of said rail delay the train or car. being cut away to provide-an angularly dis- Another object of this invention is to proposed slot 12, which provides clearance for vide a temporary switch that can be cartherail 2. On account of the depth of the ried by wrecking trains and easily and web 11 of saidrail, the head 13 of said rail quickly placed in position for the rapid is supported above the head of the rail 2, as transfer of rolling stock. best shown in Fig. 1.
A further object of this invention is to The reference numeral 14 denotes a rail 0 accomplish the above results by a mechanihaving the base flange thereof cut away, as cal construction that is durable, inexpensive at 15 and the web, as at 16 whereby said rail to manufacture and applicable to various can be placed at an angle against the outer types of railway tracks. side of the rail 2 opposite the switch rail 4.
With the above and other objects in view, The rail 14' has the cut away end thereof the invention resides in the novel construcprovided with a tongue 17 adapted to extend tion, combination and arrangement of parts over the head of the rail 2, said tongue havto be hereinafter specifically described and ing a beveled surface18 that permits of the then claimed. wheels of rolling stock easily riding on to Reference will now be had to the drawing, the tongue and then on to the rail 14. The wherein opposite end of the rail 14 abuts the end of Figure 1 is a plan of a crossover in aca transfer rail 19which isarranged in parcordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a side allelism with the rail 9. Rails similar to the elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a longitudirails 4, 10 and 14 are used in connection with nal sectional view of the crossover, Fig. '4 the track to which the rolling stock is to be is an enlarged perspective view of a tongue switched or transferred. forming part of the crossover, and Fig. ,5 From the foregoing it will be observed is an enlarged perspective View of the crossthat the crossover comprises three especially over rail of the crossover. constructed rails for one track and similar The reference numeral 1 denotes ties or rails for another track, these rails being used sleepers supporting main rails 2 and 3 conin connection with sections of rails, the stituting a track, these rails being secured length of the ordinary sections of rails deto the ties or sleepers in the ordinary and pending upon the angle of the crossover relawell known manner, preferably by spikes tively to the tracks on to which rolling stock (not shown). is to be transferred. Y
The reference numeral 4 denotes a switch It is to be understood that the especially rail mounted upon the ties 1, said switch designed rails of the crossover device can be rail having the base flanges 5 thereof cut constructed for electric railway rails or any away, as at 6 to engage the base flange 7 other type of rail, and while in the drawing of the rail 3. The web and head of'the rail. there is illustrated a preferred embodiment 11gl 4 extend over the base flange 7 and are cut of the invention, it is to be understood that away at an angle, as at 8 to engage the web the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Vhat I claim is A crossover comprising a pair of rail members 9 and 19, the former arranged exteriorly of and the latter between the main track rails, a switch rail 4 arranged between the main track rails, registering with the rail 9 and cut away at one end to engage the inner side of the webtand to overlap and engage the inner side of the base of one of the main track rails and further flush with the head of said main track rail, a rail 14 positioned exteriorly of the main track rails, registering with the rail 19 and cut away at one end to provide a tongue extending on to the head of and further engaging the outer side of the web and the outer edge of and overlapping the inner side of the base of the other track rail, said tongue gradually increasing in height upwardly, and a crossover rail registering with one end of the rail 9 and cut away intermediate its ends for the passage of that track rail upon which the head extends, said crossover rail having the web thereof of sufficient height to support its head above the head of that track rail which extends through said crossover rail, said crossover rail engaging the inner and outer faces of that track rail upon which said tongue extends and further engaging each side edge of and overlapping the base of said rail, said crossover rail gradually increasing in height from each end toward the center thereof.
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
