Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, PETER P. RmsnNHUs and VIcToR SUTHERLAND, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to gloves and particularly to durable gloves especially designed for heavy service.

The improvement consists in a novel construction of the thumb and a method of attaching the thumb to the glove so as to reinforce the parts of the glove most subjected to wear and strain. By our improved construction a part of the thumb proper, the ball of the thumb and the front of the palm surrounding the thumb are reinforced by extra layers of material in such a manner that the maximum of durability is combined with the maximum of comfort. No sacrifice is made in fit or appearance.

Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a broken perspective of the thumb and palm; Fig. 2 is a view of the blank of the thumb piece proper; Fig. 3 is a view of one of the reinforcing pieces; Fig. 4 is a view of the other reinforcing piece; Fig. 5 is a broken View of a part of the glove blank showing the thumb opening; and Fig. 6 is a view of the thumb blank showing the relative positions of the reinforcing pieces when applied thereto in process of constructing the glove.

We do not' limit ourselves to the precise blank patterns herein illustrated and described; nor to the precise method of arrangement; nor to the precise method of joining the parts illustrated, viz. stitching. We contemplate any variations within the scope of the claim.

Reference character 1 represents the thumb piece proper; 2 the outer reinforcing member and 3 the under-piece which reinforces the palm at the portion radiating from the point 6 at the top of the thumb openin 4.

In making up the glove, the thumb pieces 1, 2, 3 are relatively arranged as shown in Fig. 6 and are assembled so that the upper part of blank 2 falls on the outer side of the glove and the lower bifurcated portion falls on the wrong side. The blank 3 is placed altogether on the inner side. The edges 7, 7 are joined; the edges 8 and 9 are stitched together so that the points 10, 11 coincide. The edge 12 of blank 2 is stitched to blank 1 in the approximate position shown in Fig. 6, but in such a manner that the edge 15 of blank 2 meets the portion 16 of blank 1 and the point 13 falls at the point 14. The edge 17 of blank 1 is stitched to blank 2 on approximately the dotted line w-w of Fig. 3. The point of junction 5 of the thumb pieces 1, 2, 3 is joined to the upper point 6 of the thumb opening 4. The curved edge 18 of blank 3 is joined to the palm of the glove above the thumb opening. The edge 19 of blank 3 and edge 20 of blank 2 are seamed together and the edge 21 of blank 3 is stitched along the seam formed by the edges 15 and 16.

When the thumb is assembled as shown in Fig. 1, double rows of stitching are preferably used on the seams joining the blank 2 to the blank 1, and the thumb as a whole to the glove, both at the inside edges of the thumb pieces and at the rim of the thumb opening.

Our improved construction provides two plies over the front and ball portions of the thumb and the area of the palm encircling the thumb from the point 6, and the material is trebled at the portion designated by 22 on Fig. 1. The portion of blank 3 bounded by the edges 20, 8 and 10 is not doubled under blank 1 but lies adjacent thereto and forms a part of the thumb proper.

We claim:
