SAFETY HAT-PIN.
Speeification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 2, 1911.
Pateted Mar. 19, 1912. Serial No. 606,125.
To au wlom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL B. F. XVEIDLOG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelton, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Hat-Pins; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exaot. description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a broken view in elevation of a hat-pin constructed in accordance with my nvention and showing its removable Safetybutton applied to its point. Fig. 2 an enlarged view in central section, showing the button mounted in the head of thepin. Fig. 3 a sectional view on the same scale, showing the button applied to the point of the pin. F ig. 4 a seetional view, showing a modified form of the Safety-button.
My invention relates to an improvement ,in Safety hat-pns for ladies use, the Object being to produce a simple, convenient and effective hat-pin which shall overcome the serious dangers attendant upon the use of unguarded hat-pirs as generally constructed.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a. Safety hat-pin the head of which is formed with a socket for the reception of the yielding stem of a Safety button adapted to be applied to the point of the pin after the same has been thrust through the crown of a hat.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, the head 2 of the pin proper 3 is formed with a concentric socket 4 leading into it from its outer face for the reception of the tubular yielding stem 5, of a Safetybutton or guard 6 which is mounted in the head 2 of the pin when not applied to the point of the pin for the protection of the same as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The tubular stem 5 is longitudinally split as at 7 to make it yielding, while the button (S is formed with a knurled edge 8 to enable it to be readily grasped. The said head is formed with an annular flange which protects the Safety button or guard when the same is mounted in the said head, the flange being enough larger in diameter than the button to provide the clearance required for the gripping of the button by the fingers for its removal from the head.
W hen the pin is not actually in use for holding on a hat, the button G will be mounted in the head of the pin as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in which the button appears as though it were a feature of the head of the pin. The button when so mounted in the head of the pin is out of the way but combined with the pin SO as to be readily accessible when needed. Just before the pin is thrust through the crown of a hat, it is intended that the button 6 shall be grasped by its knurled edge 8 and removed from the head 2 of the pin, after which the button is applied to the point of the pin as shown in Figs. l and 3, the longitudinal Opening 9 of its stem being just enough snaller than the point 10 of the pin to develop the friction required to hold the button on the point 10 of the pin under all ordinary circunstances.
Preparatory to removing the pin from the hat, the button is pulled off the point of the pin; then when the pin has been removed from the hat, the button is again inserted into the head of the pin so as to be ready for use the next time. As shown in Fig. 4 the Safety-button or guard G is provided with a rubber cushion 12 firmly set in place.
It is apparent that in carrying out my invention, some changes in the forn of the head of the pin and in the Safety button itself may be made without departing from ny invention, which contenplates the construction of the head of the pin and the button in such a way that they may be readily Combined when the pin is not in use as a hat-pin.
I claim:
In a Safety hat pin, the combination with the pin proper, of a head formed with a concentric socket leading into it from its outer face and having an annular protecting flange, a Safety or guard button having a split tubular stem to receive the point of the pin proper when the hat pin is in use and adapted to be entered into the said concenspecification in the presence of two subscribtric socket in the said heai When ;he ha'lt pin ing witnesses. is not in use, the said ange o the lead being adapted in Size to provide the clear- GAEL WEIDLOG' anae required for gripping the guard for its Witnesses: removal from the head. FREDERIC C. EARLE,
In testimony whereof, I have signed this CLARA L. WEED.
