No. 101,834. A Patented April 12, 1870.

JOHN DEEBLE, OF PLANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 101,834, dated April 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PERCH SPRING-CLIPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ons DEEBLE, of Plantsville,
in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut,
have invented a new and useful improved Spring-Clip; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, sucient to en-` able others skilled inthe 'art' to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,` reference being y had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of my clipapplied to a cariiage front spring.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same.
This invention relates to a clip, wherein a plate and three or more bolts are constructed in one piece, the
lower plate, when used, being made separate.
In clips a's heretofore constructed, the upper and lowerplates are connected together by bolts, which, if used on wagons or carriages, pass through or around the head-block or bolstel-the spring and the bedplates, the bolts being provided with nuts or female screws at their ends.
In this arrangement of parts the bolts, not being attached permanently to either plate, frequently drop out of their receptacle and are lost when the nuts at their ends work olf besides, by this construction, both .the head-block and spring are materially weakened by the boltlholes made through them, and the bolts not being permanently attached to either plate are frequently subjected to unequal strain, thereby causing their breakage.
To remedy these defects is the object of my invention, and to this end- It consists in forming the upper plate, preferably,'
and its bolts in one piece, the latter embracing the head-block and spring' in conjunction with a lower The part or parts b l1 b of thelower plate are firmly attached to the reach or reaches of the carriage or wagon.
c is the head-block or bolster, of usual construction.
e is the upper plate, provided with the bolts d d d permanently attached or formed in one piece with said plate so that if a nut, m, on the end of `a bolt, d, should work 01T, the, bolt would still remain connected with V the upper plate e.
The bolts d d are made plane or flat ou their inner sides, so as to fit snugly and embrace the head-block or bolster and spring, S, shown in dotted lines in iig. 1, through'a suitable orifice in which the king-bolt passes. l
m m are nuts on the ends of the bolts d, the object of which is obvious. By this arrangement of parts the defects of the common construction of clips Aare obviated. There is no liability of the loss or displacemeut of any of the bolts, whilst the lateral strain ou the bolts is equalized; nor are the spring and headblock weakened by extra holes `made through them for the passage of bolts as in the ordinary construction of clips.
Another advantage possessed by my clip is,.tl1at it can be used for clipping either front, back,.or side springs, with their appropriate parts, and, as before said, can be used on a singleor double peerch vehicle.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The three-pronged clip consisting of platee, provided with a single bolt on one side, arranged opposite to two bolts on the other side, and made in one piece, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with the above, the single or double perch plate a b, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 8th day of February, 1870.
. JOHN DEEBLE.
Witnesses:
HENRY R. BRADLEY, WILLIAM H.l Ho'rcHKIss.
