UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALKER G. ANDERSON, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON..
DISPLAY -RAGK.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALKER G. ANDERSON, a subject of the King of England, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to racks for the display of merchandise.
The objects of these improvements are to simplify the construction of such devices upon which goods may be displayed and render them strong and durable in use; and to provide a rack which is readily adjustable displayed.
With these and other objects in view, as
will appear hereafter in the following description, the invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of devices, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings accompanying this application, Figure l is a side elevation of a display rack embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the extended condition of the rack being shown in full lines while the broken lines indicate the rack when closed; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through the extensible bar.
The reference numeral 5 designates a pair of horizontal side rails arranged in parallel. The material comprising said rails may be extended downwardly at each end thereof to form leg supports 6 and thence upwardly to comprise the side frame 7 for holding the goods from lateral displacement. Each said rail and respective side frame are formed integral and provide a relatively strong and rigid construction. A bar intermediate said side rails is comprised of elements 8 and 9 which are slidably connected together to afi'ord longitudinal extension thereof. Means for effecting the sliding adjustment of the length of the bar may consist in a longitudinal slot 10 in proximity of an end as 8, 9 of each of the respective elements and a stud 11 between each said slot and the adjacent extremity. Said ends are overlapped and the stud of the one element enters the slot of the opposing element while the enlarged head 11 of said stud obviates their withdrawal from reciprocal connection.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 23, 1911.

Serial No. 604,114.
Said intermediate bar and parallel side rails are expansively connected together through the medium of parallel motion links 12 which are disposed in pairs in the form of a V, the apices thereof having pivotal connections at 13 with the respective bar elements 8 and 9. The opposite end of each of said links is pivotally connected with an inwardlydirected lug 14 which, in turn, are each rigidly secured to the respective side rails. A plurality of such pairs of connected links are secured to each bar element with their apices directed toward the outer end 1 of said element and oppositely to those conto the varying widths and sizes of the goods nected to the companion bar-element. WVhen pressure is exerted upon the side rails the said links acting in parallel motion are thrust in longitudinal directions carrying therewith the respective bar-element and eifecting the expansion or contraction of the length of the intermediate bar while said side rails are coincidentally expanded or contracted in parallel relation to each other and said bar.
Among the advantages of the invention is the provision of an extensible and adjustable rack with the side rails thereof integral and therefore of stronger and lighter construction than devices for a similar purpose wherein such side rails are made telescopic. The provision of an intermediate bar with the side rails connected by parallel motion links affords a simple and effective means for lateral adjustment and a strong and relatively flat supporting surface for the reception of the goods.
What I claim, isi A display rack comprising-a pair of vertically disposed parallel frames each formed from a single bar of material and including a longitudinally extending bottom member having depending ends, upright end members having angular lower ends terminating in the depending ends of said bottom member and forming in connection with said depending ends supporting feet, each' of said frames further including a top member merging into the end members and formed with a central depending portion, a plurality of inwardly-extending lugs carried by each of said bottom members, an extensible bar interposed between and parallel with said bottom members, a set of links having I of said links operating in an opposite directheir outer ends pivotally connected to the tion with respect to the other of the links lugs of one bottom member and their inner of each set.
ends pivotally connected to said bar, and a YVALKER Gr. ANDERSON. set of links pivotally connected at their outer lVitnesses:
ends to the lugs of the other bottom member I-IoRAon BARNES,
and at their inner ends to said bars, certain E. PETERSON.
