Application led March 13, 1911. Serial No. 614,010.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN SYKES, a subject of King George V of Great Britain, residing at Huddersfield, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Yarn-Tension Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for putting tension on to yarn such as are employed in winding and similar machines in which yarn' is dealt with, and my object is to provide an improved device for the purpose.
According to my invention, the yarn is caused to pass around two series or sets of pins or studs,l one set secured to a disk having segmental slots therein and capable of rotary movement within the limits of the slots on a fixed stud, and the other set or series secured to a fixed disk and extending through the slots in the movable disk, the periphery of which is suitably weighted at one side. The yarn or thread is passed alternately around the two sets of pins in a sinuous course, and the action of the weight on the periphery of the movable disk tends to partly rotate same in one direction to carry the pins thereon away from the pins on the stationary disk and the extent of movement of the movable disk under the gravity action ofthe weight ives the necessary tension to the yarn t roughout the winding or like operation.
.In the accompanying drawing z-ligure 1 is a front elevation of a tension device embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is an edge or side view thereof.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a xed disk having a series of pins 2 projecting from the face thereof.
3 represents a movable disk, loosely pivoted at 4 concentrically with and in front of the disk 1 and having. a series of segmental slots 5 through which the pins 2 on the fixed disk project. Intermediate the slots 5 on the movable `'disk are a series of pins 6 which alternate with the series of pins 2. An adjustable weight 7 is connected in anysuitable manner, andV in the instance shown by a hooked wire 7 to the periphery of the movable disk 3 the tendency of thev weight being to rotate the movable disk within the limit of the-segmental slots 5 iin a direction contrary to the arrow A, Fig. -1..
The yarn 8, to which` tension is to be applied, is passed alternately around the pins 2 and 6 taking a sinuous course, as shown, the tension being obtained by the pull on the yarn holding up the movable disk in the direction of the arrow A against the gravity action of the weight which is tending to rotate the said disk inthe opposite direction. The fixed disk is provided on opposite sides of its center with suitable guide eyes 9 to guide the yarn and maintain it in its engagement with the pins. Means such as the handle 10 may be provided on the movable disk ,to rotate same to set the pins 6 apart from the stationary pins 2 to enable the yarn to be passed between same without the necessity of threading the yarn around the pins, the release of the disk causing the yarn to be engaged by the pins in the manner shown. If desired', instead of employing weights as above set forth the fixed and movable disks might be connected by a spring'whose tension is adjustable, the pull on the yarn tending to hold up the movable disk against the pull of the spring.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v In a yarn tension device, the combination, with a stationary disk, guide eyes projecting from the said disk at opposite sides of its center, and two rows of pins arranged radially between the guide eyes in line with each other and project-in from the face of the disk; of a movable disk pivoted concentric with the stationary disk and provided with curved slots which clear the said pins and which limit the motion of the movable disk by contact with the said pins, two rows EDWIN SYKES.
