UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALONZO A. WARNER, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIG-NOR T LANDERS, FRARY & CLARK, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ACOBPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
ROLLER-RETAINING DEVICE.
Application filed June 9, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO A. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hart ford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Retaining Devices, of which the following is a specification.
* This invention relates to devices for preventing the accidental displacement and removal of rollers which are supported at their ends in brackets, for instance rollers 1such as are used for towels, paper and the ike.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple, inexpensive and efiective device for the purpose described.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a view-of a roller and its supporting brackets embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through an end of the roller and one of the brackets. Fig. 3 is a side View of the bracket and roller, the knurled end of the locking pin being removed.
Referring to the drawings A denotes the brackets slotted as at B and having enlarged apertures C at the ends of the slots.
D is the roller.
E E are shaft pins mounted in the ends of the roller and by means of which the roller is supported in the brackets. These shaft pins, or at least one of them, is made in the following manner in accordance with my invention. The end of the roller is recessed as at 10. A cap 11 fits over the end of the roller and closes the recess. The cap is centrally apertured and the shaft pin E is longitudinally movable through this aperture being provided with an enlarged section 12 and knurled head 13. The inner end of the shaft pin is provided with a spring abutment 14;, a spring 15 being located between this abutment and the inner side of the cap. The spring normally holds the enlarged section of the pin up against the cap, and it is of such size that it fits the enlarged aperture 0 but is too large to slide in the slot B. It will, therefore, be
seen that when the rollers are once placed in the brackets, the spring holding the enlarged section of the shaft pin in the enlarged aperture C will prevent the accidental removal of the roller. the roller it is necessary to take hold of the head and draw the shaft pin out so that it is in register with the slot.
The device is simple and effective and so constructed that in the ordinary use of the roller, the strain to which it is subjected does not tend to unlock it from the brackets.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with brackets, one of which has a slot terminating in an enlarged aper ture, and a roller adapted to be supported by said brackets, of a shaft-pin mounted in an end of said roller, said shaft-pin being formed in two diameters, one of which is slightly less than the width of said slot and adapted to slide therein, the diameter of the other part being greater than the width of said slot but adapted to fit within said onlarged aperture, said bracket and pin being adapted for relative movement longitudinally of the pin, and means for normally holding said enlarged section in alinement with said slot to thereby prevent disengagement of the roll from said bracket.
2. In a device of the character described a pair of brackets, a roller adapted to be supported thereby, one of said brackets having a slot terminating in an enlarged aperture, a shaft pin mounted in an end of said roller, and adapted to slide in said slot and having a section larger than said slot but adapted to fit in said aperture, means for normally holding said shaft pin in position with its enlarged section in said aperture, said pin being movable longitudinally against said holding means to disengage its enlarged section from said aperture.
ALONZO A. WARNER.
